Red Shirts will hold mass rally in Aksa Road: UDD chair

BANGKOK, April 1 -- The United Front of Democracy Against Dictatorship (UDD), Thailands's red shirts group, will hold a mass rally Saturday in Aksa Road in Nakhon Pathom's Buddhamonthon and the gathering is expected to last 2-3 days, according to UDD chairman Jatuporn Prompan.

Mr Jatuporn said that more than 500,000 red shirts are expected to turn up at the group's Saturday mass rally to show that the UDD has more supporters than the anti-government protesters, the People's Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC).

He urged the pro-government UDD to prepare to continue their demonstration for at least several days.

Thida Thavornseth, former chairwoman of the UDD, said that the group has chosen to hold mass rally at Aksa Road near Buddhamonthon because the venue is an expansive area and would not cause any trouble or difficulties to the general public.

Ms Thida claimed that the April 5 rally was considered a rehearsal because the group has not held a major gathering for a long time. It would definitely not be the last fight because the fight for the people will not be final.

"We do not fight for any particular person but we fight for the benefit of the general public," she said.

Meanwhile, caretaker Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra told reporters that she worried about the mass rallies and has assigned CAPO, the Centre for the Administration of Peace and Order (CAPO), to closely monitor the situation and provide safety equally to all groups.

She instructed CAPO to prevent any confrontation between the rival groups and ensure the safety of the general public.

PDRC leader Suthep Thaugsuban earlier announced that a major assembly of protest leaders nationwide will be held this Saturday to map out a new offensive strategy and set a date for what he is calling the "big battle." (MCOT online news)

" We do not fight for any particular person but we fight for the benefit of the general public," she said. "

No you don't. You fight for Thaksin. Period.

It is interesting that Thida describes this rally as a " rehearsal ", because they haven't " held a major gathering for a long time ". One gets the feeling she already knows that Jatuporn's 500,000 will never materialize. At the outset of the UDD rally in 2010, independent foreign estimates put the UDD turnout at between 100,000 and 120,000. But after two days, it sharply declined, and never gained anything near that again. That 100,000 to 120,000 was the largest gathering the UDD ever reached. What Jatuporn promises is five times that amount. One wonders why he boxes himself in like that time and time again, other than simply assuming that his followers forget what he says as easily as he does.

From the public's point of view, however, it better be peaceful. Unlike the UDD, the people of Bangkok have very good memories.

First UDD rally for a long time. I guess that must mean the coffers are full again.

The reds need a good showing though as Sooty's gang have been able to put up some impressive numbers on occasion and the UDD head honchos won't want to have to come up with any more lame excuses when hardly anyone turns up.

Better get TAT's number counters in to be on the safe side. thumbsup.gif

I thought she stepped down. What a cow this woman is. FIGHT FOR THE PEOPLE... indeed! Where are you fighting? What are you fighting for? To get rice farmers paid? I NEVER see reds stating this is an objective.

Right on our doorstep. Thanks for the warning, TV. We will stock up our fridge and stay at home. The Barommaratchachonnanee Rd. will be clogged the full length anyway during this "event".

I wonder what that beautiful Aksa road will look like when the red rabble has left.

Probably like a road.

Instead of stocking the fridge and hiding away, why not get out and talk to the Thai people who are standing up for and defending their democratic rights ?

You know, mingle a bit.

I will leave the mingling to those who have antied into the pot. They are the ones who seem to think they have the winning hand. The problem seems to be as in many table stakes, no lmit games its not a good place for most wannabe gamblers to learn the odds of the draw vs the investment that they can loose. Especially as some of the players apparently come prepared for a showdown which does not refer to the cards, they carry.

I have managed to live through some pertty dicey times by picking, chosing and playing the odds that favor me, and not letting some wannabe political hack do so, but you have a good day at what could be a zoo with all the animals on the loose..

Red Fred's way of saying his dick is bigger than Southern Man's........but I don't believe him.

For the red side, i always believe they can mobilize huge crowd. of course the big boss pocket is getting a big hole as well.

But if this time low turnout will be very pathetic.

Even been paid to attend, people also not coming. Then what does this signal at?

Yeah Mingle, and maybe have a good laugh about children getting murdered in Trat, then chit chat a bit more how Red democracy works, and if there is time, go over the Red School curriculum.

Firstly, I come from the UK, just to put my comments in context.

Do any of my compatriots or any other nationals in Thailand see similarities between what is happening today, in Thailand, and what happened in the UK and other countries

in the whole of the 20th century?

Re: class struggle.

I do not consider myself rigidly, a capitalist; socialist, etc.

Britain had to be dragged kicking and screaming into the 20th century. I surmise that we are seeing a similar process in our beloved Thailand.

There is staggering amounts of wealth in Thailand, as there is in our respective countries. It would be nice to see it spread around a bit more evenly!

These are grassroots uprisings cross-fertilized perhaps from a world contagion yet they often have similarities – corrupt governments. Turkey, Ukraine, Thailand, Venezuela and Bosnia-Herzegovina are all middle-income democracies with elected leaders besieged by people angry at misgovernment, corruption and economic sclerosis

well means PDCR will call and raise by few thousand.

what does it make any difference when both side estimate the number themselves and no independent accounting available that can be trusted
