Five-day celebration declared

BANGKOK: -- The cabinet has declared Friday as a holiday, in addition to next Monday and Tuesday, to mark the royal Diamond Jubilee.

The government had previously declared next Monday and Tuesday as official holidays to celebrate the 60th anniversary of His Majesty the King's accession to the throne. The new decision adds Friday, or June 9, the actual anniversary day.

Celebrations, public and private, are scheduled throughout the weekend. Foreign royalty is to begin arriving in Thailand tomorrow.

Unfortunately it is only Bangkok and surrounding areas. Was expecting an extra long weekend for the university and ends up only Friday is. Well, 3 days off is better then two but not as nice as 5. :o

Hopefully the deal is that you are decent enough to give them noth the salary and the holidays the rightfully become!

Public holidays are statute limited??? What does the statute read, Not less than %75 of the calendar year may be holidays ???

whats the deal on maids and drivers for the upcoming holidays? do they get off too?

To get past the usual complaints made about anything Thai, I think it is fair to say that this is as good excuse as any to have a holiday. 60 years of honest toil is a effort worthy of respect. Enjoy the Kings reign because we do not know what will follow after this wise man leaves the field of play.

Public Holidays

An employer must grant its employees a minimum of 13 paid public holidays each year. If a public holiday falls on a weekly day off, the next working day must be granted as a paid holiday. The public holidays must include Labor Day (May 1). The other twelve holidays must be chosen from a list of 16 holidays published by the Thai government. An employer must notify its employees which days will be considered public holidays before the beginning of the calendar year.

:o ... just got a meeting on Friday ...

Very, very well said.

I think having an extra holiday or two in honour of this celebration is a great idea. What is not a great idea in my opinion, is waiting until the absolute last possible moment to declare the holiday(s) when it could have been done ages ago.

Has anyone got confirmation yet that the cabinet decreed the additional Friday holiday as nation-wide or is it just for Bangkok and suburbs?

As I mentioned in my post, Chiangmai University has that day (Friday) off for the holday (just checked with the secretaries again) but not Monday and Tuesday. So would seem Friday is nation wide.

You use of the word toil suggests that life as a monarch is hard work. I would beg to differ. Honest work maybe but toil i think not.

it still seems confusing, for those outside of bangkok, as to whether this will be a holiday. If it is not that, to me, would seem grossly unfair.

Win some ... lose some. The number of public holidays is a Statute limited number. Take these and lose others.

I didn't appreciate that. I was under the impression that the thirteen statutory holidays, traditionally observed in Thailand, are sacrosanct but additional holidays can be announced by Thai Government decree.

The big question is - will all the banks be shut on Friday as well?

(It's a good job the Thai Baht isn't a major currency - arbitrarily changing holidays at such late notice can cause huge problems for banks on Currency swaps, etc. if one of the parties hasn't updated their systems with the new holidays...)

Why not just go on Thursday? Nobody will harm you if you are one day early, but if you are late...

A note to the wise: draw out lots of money, or do your banking by Thursday or whenever the eve of the holiday is. Expect ATM's to be empty before the holidays end.

Do everything official, like reporting, early. The immigration officials might be forgiving, and then again, they might not be.

Of course, I'm often wrong.
