BANGKOK: -- Privy Council chief accepts proposal by Man of State group to request help from the King to resolve crisis

The Privy Council president has agreed to a proposal by the Man of State group to seek His Majesty the King's assistance to help end the political crisis and allow the country to move forward, according to the group's leader.

Saiyud Kerdphol, a retired Army general who is a former armed forces supreme commander, said yesterday that General Prem Tinsulanonda, the chief royal adviser, would submit to the King an appeal by the group for a royal command to solve the ongoing crisis.

He said the measure suggested by the group, in a bid to restore peace in the country, would be in line with the Constitution.

"It will not involve Article 7 of the Constitution or a neutral prime minister. But I will not talk about it in detail now," Saiyud said in an interview with the Nation Group yesterday.

Saiyud, 93, said he met Prem personally on Friday for about an hour to talk about the matter. He said Prem agreed to his group's idea of seeking royal assistance.

He expected the group's appeal to His Majesty the King would be completed within the next week, adding that Prem would later submit the proposed measure for royal endorsement.

Saiyud explained that His Majesty helped settle a number of serious conflicts in the country in the past. These included turm-oil in Chinatown after the end of World War II, conflict following the student-led uprising in 1973, and the pro-democracy protest in May 1992.

He was convinced that the King's moral power would again help solve another severe conflict.

This latest attempt by the Man of State group comes after the confrontation between the government and the anti-government People's Democratic Reform Committee has continued for six months.

Saiyud said that with a royal order to be issued, he believed that the crisis would be resolved. He added that in Thai history, a royal order had never been challenged.

When asked to comment on possible opposition by government supporters, Saiyud

said the relevant authorities including the armed forces should perform their duty in this regard.

"The person who challenges a royal order for the first time in Thai history will be recorded in the history books," he said.

Saiyud said he was working on this matter for the benefit of the country as he had concern for the country.

"I can't just stay idle. This is my country. I have not slept well," he said.

"The country will not head for a dead-end because we have the King as our head of state.

"The government works on be-half of the King and it volunteers to run the country so that the country is in peace and order. They took their vow before His Majesty and what have they done for the country over the past two years?"

Saiyud once chaired the People’s Network for Election, an election watchdog.

The Man of State group, which was formed on January 28, earlier suggested that the political crisis should be solved by intervention of the military. The group consists mainly of retired high-ranking military commanders, government officials and academics.

It's good to see men such as Prem are not intimidated by the Red thugs, and are willing to work to resolve the situation.

The result of this could either be to find the solution that all are hoping for or it could change Thailand for ever...

Was there a royal decree for the Feb 2nd election?

It is the correct group to resolve the upcoming vacuum but think this should be occurring after the judicial process has dealt to the puppet and Thaksin's cronies.

I am interested in what comes out of the Royal Household - sick of all sides claiming that some third party has said this or that but never producing any evidence

Given Thaksin's lack of morals about spreading lies and disinformation, it's a great idea NOT to give him a heads-up and a chance to do something about it before it happens.

Pretty sure this is a less than a neutral group but it is what it is and no matter what we feel or who we support we may very well be seeing a shift....

everyone will speculate no doubt which way the shift will go but can get a pretty good idea by searching out these names should this effort move forward.

I hope these gentlemen can draft a responsible and neutral resolution for His Majesty to sign off on... should this be the end game.

Am also curious which hand will countersign the decree should it become a reality as that is where the responsibility would lie.

Seconded.

There is no neutral group left, save for the king. He is the only one with authority and respect to make all sides step back and find common ground towards a solution. This crisis has been steadily drifting towards this solution except that it needed to first become deadlocked. Whether the proposal is from Thaksin, Prem or whoever is irrelevant, it is a attempt at mediated solution. The king has deliberately stayed out of it in order to remain impartial, I'm sure we can rely on his judgment to accept or modify a proposal, should he choose to, that would be fair. If its not acceptable to any particular party then perhaps it's because that party is angling for some unfair advantage or to preserve an unbalanced status quo that suits them.

On the one hand I can agree with you, but on the other hand, I can't. Especially if that 93 yr old man is stuck in the past and can only think of the "glory days" of "yesteryear", which I think most of those in this group fall into.

I think the Queen of England was the last monarch to remove a government and that was back in the late 70's when she removed the Australian government.

Trying to drag the royal household into the political conflict, it may very well blow up in his face. If the King chooses the current government what then?

He probably will, it's the only way to maintain peace. It's sad that they must involve the King, I'm sure considering his age he would have hoped his people could resolve their own problems by now.

I would like to see them put their full weight behind a democratic solution with respect for elections at the front.

What this sounds like however, is a military based solution with a "don't argue" stamp on it. After all, prem was one of the people who started off this mess for his role in instigating the coup in 2006 which triggered all that followed

It would not be the end game. It would be the start of the end game. The situation is not, however, a game. Nor will there be any winners.
