Burma / Mayanmar diving ?

Featured Replies

HI. Now Burma has opened up greatly I was just wondering what the diving opportunities are now ? Has anyone been over to look at the dive sites ? I now see they are making opening a business a bit easier for foreign owners. I have some time free coming up and was thinking of going over to check it out. Any pointers on where to start ? Yes, there are some options but those options are limited.

The best diving there would still be by liveaboard from Phuket or Khao Lak.

Free ti,e coming up right now won't do you much good, you'll have to wait till November, preferably even a bit later, from January through March.

Myanmar Andaman Resort is the only one I am aware of, apart from the liveaboards from Thailand.

The Burmese still fish using dynamite from small boats, which I was told is sourced from Thailand. It adds an interesting new underwater experience to hear the explosions and feel the shock waves. The coral destruction and of course the dead fish are not so attractive.

Macro life is good, soft corals are plentiful, but the place is over fished.

If you are a keen fishing net specialist, there are any number of 'lost' nets wrapped around the rocks too.

AIDC Dive in Ranong, Thailand.

They have an excellent liveaboard and have been diving in Myanmar for many years. Preben the owner is from Denmark and knows his stuff in Burma.

I think the consensus is that there are no developed dive sites with dive boats running out to them as in other countries. Maybe in a few years after or if they stop destroying the reefs as the Thais have done.
