Edge modem advice please.

Featured Replies

A friend just gave me an old SOLOMON SEGM-520 EDGE Modem so that I can have internet access when wandering around the country but I have no idea (neither does he because he hasn't used to for a few years) if it is still worth using and what SIM card / package would be best for unlimited access mainly in Bangkok but potentially anywhere in the country.

Any help and advice would be great. Thanks in advance thumbsup.gif

Solomon SEGM-520 (USB EDGE Modem)

Frequency: Quad Band GSM 900/1800 MHz GSM 850/1900 MHz
GPRS Class: 10
Connector: USB 2.0
Dimension: 109.3 x 42.7 x 17.7 mm
Weight: 42 g
OS Support: Windows 98SE/Me/2000/XP

This product is obsolete

While you 'could' possible still use this old EDGE Network device, a New USB 3G Data stick would be inexpensive to purchase and offer higher access speeds.

Thanks for the reply RichCor and I'll look around for the suggested USB 3G Data stick.

As you probably spotted I am totally ignorant about this subject biggrin.png

I have tried to look at the offers by the various supplies TOT, 3BB etc but I'm not sure what is the best offer for unlimited access.

Hopefully others will be along to add more constructive advice.

Being a Cheap Charlie when travelling I only subscribe to the 99฿ 3BB WiFi Data as an add-on to AIS (or 3BB) that allowed Unlimited Internet when in range, 10-100 Mbps Wifi speeds on two networks of AIS WiFi and 3BB Wifi than 60,000 hotspots nationwide.

If you want or need an always-on connection or something more convenient to connect to from inside a hotel room or restaurant then a then 3G/EDGE mobile Data Package may be more practical.

You might also want to peruse the info in What Works Where? 2G / 3G Coverage Maps Thailand. in the main "Internet, computers, communication, technology forum". Though started in 2012, that thread still hold some good information on Mobile -- with later posts discussing the national move to 2100 MHz.

If you have any new questions on 3G USB Sticks, feel free to create a new thread and new topic question either here in Mobile, or in the better covered main Internet, Computer, Communication forum where way more than a few people hang out.

You can buy a non-branded 3G USB aircard for less than 1,000 baht. These also fall-back to 2G.

The OP's device might only work on DTAC's GSM 1800 network, or AIS's old GSM 900 network. EDGE speeds here average ~ 200 Kbps.

With a better understanding of the OP's mobile data requirements and budget a more focused recommendation might follow.

Thank you both for your helpful replies thumbsup.gif

I'll rummage around and see what I can find and then possible open a new thread as suggested.
