webfact Posted May 14, 2014 Posted May 14, 2014 Shanghai, British police nab dealers of fake goodsWu YiyaoChina DailySHANGHAI: -- Shanghai police have arrested two men, including a British national, for allegedly shipping 30 million yuan (US$4.8 million) in counterfeit goods produced in China to Britain and selling them illegally.Early last year, Shanghai customs officials found a box bound for Britain containing 15,000 logos of foreign brands. The officials then contacted the police's economic crime investigation department. In cooperation with British police, the department tracked down a suspect group in Liverpool, which sold counterfeit products, including leather goods, eyewear and footwear that were produced by factories in China and assembled in Liverpool. The products were sold in Liverpool for up to 200 pounds ($337) each.British police said they have detained three men connected with the case in Liverpool.According to a suspect identified as William Li, who is British, the group has been shipping and selling fake luxury goods since 2010. Li said he came to China to find makers of counterfeit goods and logo suppliers, mainly in Guangdong province.Song Shan, a lawyer and legal observer in Shanghai, said cross-border crimes involving the manufacturing and selling of fake luxury products have been surging in recent years. Many criminal groups have taken advantage of the low cost of labour in China and expanding demand for luxury goods in overseas markets, Song said.Cheng Yiping, chief of Shanghai's economic crime investigation department, said the arrested suspects used supply chains in both China and Britain, making it more difficult for police to catch them.An investigation into the group's suppliers is on, Cheng said.-- ANN 2014-05-14
