Used up two waivers. Will I have problems starting in a new school, and what are my options if so?

As the title says, I've worked in two schools since moving here. Records show I've had two waivers.

I have a BA in the subject I teach, and also a CELTA. However, I have no other education qualifications.

I have signed a contract to start in an international school this August, but have been reading about a crackdown on third waivers. Assuming I am refused - which I am resigned to - what will I have to do? Is it possible I'll have to relocate to another country, or do I have options?

Any advice would be most appreciated.

Can't you get the teachers license? What exactly are the requirements?

I thought it was a bachelor degree, plus Thai culture course, plus the exams set out by TCT, no?

I'm fairly sure TCT licensing requirements do not apply (or they didn't) to International school teachers.

From the ISAT's website.

2.7.1 In case of a teacher or instructor or specialist

(1) Formal Schools such as general education schools, English program schools, vocational schools that follow the Ministry of Education’s curriculum, and international schools

1. Application form

2. Copy of applicant’s passport

3. Copy of work permit

4. Copy of school license

5. Certified letter and request for a temporary stay from the school specifying the applicant’s position, salary, and employment period, together with copy of a letter of teacher’s appointment in the format required by the Office of the Private Education Commission (OPEC)

6. Copy of a teaching license or a copy of a certification of license issued by Kurusapha or a copy of the letter to temporarily exempt the teacher’s license from Kurusapha

I've done research into doing these tests and the lack of information should be a source of shame and embarrassment to the ministry of education. It seems like my only option is to cobble together conflicting information from teaching forums.

Honestly, the lack of transparency and the administrative caprice makes me not want to live here any more.

A teacher licence requires a degree in education, not just any bachelor.

Is it possible that the school might find another title for me (eg 'curriculum advisor'), thereby circumventing the need for a waiver?

Might be difficult when you'd taught several years as an English teacher. It all depends on the labor department and if they really like to employ you.

Best of luck, as we're all in the same boat. Noah seems to be gone these days.

Looks like I'll have to email my new school and see if they have any leverage in this matter.

Thanks all for advice.

Educational Personnel are Librarian, Counselor, IT Officer, Registrar, General Administration Personnel and Educational Supporting Personnel as required by the Office of the Private Education Commission Regulations.

Would a Master of Education suffice?

So does that mean teachers without a degree in education can only teach in Thailand for 2 years legally with a waiver, and then are no longer allowed to teach here?

I fear I have just wasted 3 years on a B.A English. I can't believe no one i study with is aware of this. Everyone seems to think that a B.A English is enough to teach legally here.

I have attached a PDF file of the requirements for a teachers license. It says, "(Applicants must) Hold a degree in Education or an equivalent or in other related fields accredited by the Teachers Council of Thailand".

Is a degree in the subject which you teach not accredited by TCT? Or are there new requirements? (i downloaded it from their website not that long ago)

Very much so. Many teachers are facing the same problem so if schools are serious about needing a foreign teacher they have to change your job title to bypass the teaching licence requirement.

Personally, I'm fed up with the whole system and made the hard decision to leave my wife behind and head off somewhere else. I've always been a pessimist but I'm hoping that a year or two down the line the system will change for the better. I know it won't happen but we can hope for miracles.

Good luck with whatever you decide on.

I was planning to sign up for a Master's in English at a uni in Ubon, but then found out that it was not accepted by them.

No course to upgrade existing BA into BA in education.

So M.Ed's in general aren't accepted (it must be B.Ed?), or they just didn't accept the particular one you wanted to do at Ubon Uni?

It is possible in some countries to get a Master's degree without being conferred with a Bachelor's degree. Our school was told that the TL would be granted based on the Bachelor's degree, only. We had one teacher who used his Master's Degree & Master's Transcript to try and get the non-Immigrant B visa and was refused. Fortunately, he was able to produce a copy of the Bachelor's Degree, but not the transcript and he was given the non-B.

The school are suggesting that I can register to do a M.Ed. at a Bangkok university, and that the letter of registration would be enough to get me another two years.

The application itself would be around 1000 baht, but would I be registered and have the registration letter without having to pay any of the fees, or would they withhold that until they received a substantial downpayment on the tuition fee?

Or are the universities used to this corruption and play along for the thousand baht? I don't know.

It seems like an awful lot of trouble.

If your M.Ed allows you to teacher in your home country, it should be OK. If you have a teaching licence from that country, all the better. Did the MEd have a practical component? Do teaching with this MEd qualify to work in your own country? I have a one year GradDipEd from Australia and that gives me the full teaching licence - they don't even show the authorities my bachelor degree or PhD transcripts.

Did you try to talk the Khurusapha about your situation?

Actually, I'm on my third provisional teacher's permit now.

Khurusapha told me that they will accept any Bachelor Degree with 24 units in Education.

Does anyone know of a university where we can 'top up' our degrees with such units? unsure.png

A friend did a one-year, part time GradDip in Ed at Ramkamhang. He then left Thailand, so I don't know if it was accepted by the TCT.

Sorry, all i can remember was it was a 1 year GradDip advertised at about 60k a few years back. It also was not recognized outside of Thailand. I emailed them for more details, but they never replied.
