When the embassy gave me my visa they told me it was good for 6 months

When the embassy gave you a visa, they told you that it was valid for 6 months, it means that you have to use this visa (travel to Thailand) within that six months period, it does not mean that you can stay in Thailand for six months...this is quite standard for other countries as well.

I would advise the OP to listen to Ubonjoe. He clearly knows what he's talking about.

Thai immigration, as with so many countries, can be very confusing to the uninitiated but having so many tourists hopping in and out doesn't help matters either. And if you get caught for affine or have to pay OTT for a taxi just treat it is as part of the rich tapestry of travel and set it against the ridiculous bargains that are to be had too. Just remember you win some and you lose some.

Best of luck and good job, Joe. thumbsup.gif

The other option is to catch the train into Malaysia, maybe slower but cheaper.

OP is in Patong, Phuket.

Is that a problem?

I went from Hua Hin to Butterworth, that was about 1100 baht. Surely Phuket to Alor Star would be a lot less.

The OP only needs to a border crossing to use the 2nd entry of her tourist visa. You can go to Ranong for that.

She does not need to go to Penang.

Just a quick chime in before you find yourself in the IDC. Whatever you do, DO NOT get bitchy and pushy when you see immigration. When they ask for the fine, don't kick up a fuss, and start yelling at them how ridiculous this is, because your VISA is valid for 6 months. If you push your luck too much, you'll end up in the IDC for a few days to calm down.

When you see an immigration officer next, they're going to ask for a fine (500 baht/day). Pay it with a smile, and move on with your life.

Very very good advice.

Very good advice. Please also note that IDC stands for Immigration Detention Center.... or in other words "PRISON"

Steven The visa I've always received on entry into Thailand as a tourist was always only valid for 30 days, that's coming from the UK and Dubai, don't see how you state no, and then say it's confusing the issue?

I've just gone through immigration at swampy and paid my 5000 baht overstay of 10 days, they couldn't have been nicer they even have me some fresh pineapple and mango !!

All that happens Blondie is it is marked in your passport as an overstay and the amount of fine you get as well.

I am in Patong now. <deleted> I spoke to a nice Thai lady at my hotel and she told me that immigration is miles away in the middle of the island? She has good english. A red taxi near my hotel told me he wanted 1700THB to take me there this afternoon. What a rip off joke!!!! Is it safe to catch a taxi here...the guys don't look good. A scummy travel agent told me I have to go on a bus up to Burma? But he also said there is some problem with the government blocking people coming back into Thailand. What!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have a six month visa why for Thailand. Why do I have to go to another country. Ridiculous. Is it safe to go on the bus trip, will it be full of creepy guys. Anyway I need some one to sort this issue, I guess I have to do something on Tuesday as we will be partying like legends on Sunday and Monday will be a write off.

i can see why you are a blonde, just pay the o/s with a smile like i have done many times and you will not have any problems, but if you try to give the immigration guys a hard time, you may be in los, for more than six months.

Yes, there is no train connection to Phuket. Plus it does not make sense anyway, since this is not required.

Sorry you really have a bad attitude...you have your priorities all wrong as immigration visa issues should be at the top..

Show that attitude at immigration and you will be paying for the next flight out...immigration can do as they please

You seem not to take this issue seriously

And that is a big mistake on your part...

Umm, because the O/P supposedly has a visa and you never did. "Visa exempt entry," as the name implies, is an entry without a visa.

Apologies, did not realise that Alor Star had moved to Penang.

Going to the Malaysian border for a stamp is not required? But going to Myanmar is!!!!!

There is no visa requirement into Malaysia so the crossing is very straightforward, much easier for a novice. There is little at the border so Alor Star would be a better turnround if there is time to wait.

Granted the journey is not so straightforward but that is only a problem to certain mindset.

Which is not what I said.

There really is no point in making the journey as you suggested when the OP has much easier options in going to Burma or going to immigration in Phuket. Taking the train from Phuket really is not a very bright idea, especially to a destination further away than alternative options.

I have had to remove some more off topic posts. Unless you have a suggestion to help the OP with their problem please do not bother to post because it will be removed.

Bumping my previous warning since I have had to remove some more posts.

It would appear that the general view on this forum is that you get to the border and back as fast as possible, and then complain about the mini bus driver.

To turn the border run into a trip out seems to be an inconceivable option.

Why is everybody fighting here on my question. This is the first time I have been to a Asian country. Now because of this stupid dodgy six months visa, I need some help. I thought this website would help me, but all of the other people are just arguing with each other and it is getting even more confusing. My mum told me just to come back home. Maybe that is best. Why stay in a country where they make everything so difficult. I just want to party and spend some money with my friends. Don't they want my money. The train sounds like a good idea. I see on google that the buses are death traps and the traffic here is just nuts. Where do some of these guys get there licences. Is the train station close to Patong. Is there a bus that goes from the Shopping mall (juncelon) to the train station. Is the train safe??? What happens on the train? Does someone come on and give you the new visa when you get to Burma?

It is not a dodgy visa. It is the same tourist visa that lots of people have gotten and continue to get. The majority of people are aware that the visa only gives a 60 day entry that can be extended for 30 days at immigration. They plan to do either a trip out and back after 60 days or a trip to immigration for the extension.

As far as I know there is no train from Phuket. And there is certainly not one to Burma.

There is an immigration office on beach road in Patong (closed today). Just go there and ask them on Monday. Or do a border run.

To catch the train, take a bus from patong to the main busstation, and take a bus to Had yai from there. From Hat Yai you can take the train to Malaysia.

First thing to do is get your shit together and work on your legal requirements. You can party at any time but not so easy in the "monkey cage".

People are trying to help you and you carry on about partying first!

The visa is not dodgy dont blame the system or the country for your incompetance. Its easy to sort out and has been explained to you, stop complaining and take the advice the fault lies with you no one else, you need to accept that before you get yourself in any deeper!

I understand there is an immigration office on Thaweewong Rd. Go there and pay the overstay and get a 30day extension Fine +1900 THB or do a border run as advised and pay the overstay at the border and utalise the second part of your visa. Dont get arsy with Thai officials, they dont play nice!

Remember it is you that is in the wrong and not them, accepting that will be in your interest.

Listen to UbonJoe everything he has told you is sound good advice...then act on it as soon as possible!!

Ubon Joe is the guy to listen to as he knows what he is talking about. He recently offered advice to me which was very helpful.

I live in Ranong and I would suggest that you would travel here from Phuket and do your visa run at the Andaman Casino. Not only is it very safe but it is stress free. You will have no problems whatsoever with the friendly immigration guys other than having to pay your overstay and whilst you are at the luxurious casino complex you can enjoy duty free shopping and glorious views. Start to finish it will take about 90 minutes including crossing the Andaman sea.

Hope this helps to alleviate your concerns.
