Hi their could someone explain to me what 1st class car insurance is.

What I think it is if your car is 1st class insurance does that mean anyone with a licence is able to drive it and be covered.

Thanks

1ST Class

The same as fully comprehensive in the UK.

But read the small print. Mine are any driver

Must have a Thai License.

Do not have to have Thai DL - but must be a legal DL

Both my insurance policies state that you must have a Thai driving License.

The first from Toyota the second from Thanachard. No issue unless you try and make a claim. Then you might get a nasty surprise.

I am not sure about other companies out there.

I checked with my Toyota insurance and a UK licence was fine - although it may be a different underwriter.

Still, having the Thai licence can save a whole lot of bother!

If living in Thailand a Thai DL is by law required. So any insurance company can deny a claim, if only based on that.

If not living here a foreign DL is in general accepted, provided certain conditions are met regarding both DL and time spent in country. In that case, unless specifically mentioned in the policy conditions, not having a Thai DL is not a prerequisite for a claim. Probably the policy wording is aimed at people living in Thailand, I do know from my previous Tanachart insurance it was not a requirement.

it is so easy to get a Thai DL not worth allowing them the wriggle room. especially if mentioned in the policy. one has to make choices and because it is mentioned i keep mine up to date ie renew it every 5 years.

"Any driver" is an option, often included by default, for which you pay. If you forego the option you can get a decent discount on the premium as I did. My policy actually still covers "any driver" but the excess is doubled when the driver is not me, and this seems ideal as I dont expect my vehicle to be driven by anyone else.

Is the first class insurance supplied by nissan any good

How can we tell? Different dealerships provide 'free' first class insurance through different carriers. If you can post some details, there's a chance an opinion can be formed.

Usually 1st class insurance is any driver. You can get the premium reduced if 2 named drivers. Remember here the motor is insured, not individual drivers.

A bit of a tangent - I hope useful for others too.

Can someone please explain what the "insurance" cover that is purchased with the tax each year is for? Is it only injury to people in other cars, or is it similar to overseas 3rd party policies that also cover damage to other vehicles? If not, is 3rd party insurance available here in LOS?

*For injured third party or other party which is proven to be not at fault. The liability is covered to anyone injured or killed in an accident

Basic Coverage
The Company will pay the injured party for medical expenses in case of bodily injury and funeral expenses in case of loss of life without waiting for proof of guilt. The Company will indemnify the injured party or his heir within 7 days from the date of claim submission. This indemnity is called Preliminary Compensation.
