Hollande condemns Thai coup, calls for elections

PARIS, May 22, 2014 (AFP) - French President Francois Hollande Thursday condemned the army coup in Thailand and called for an immediate return to the rule of law.

His reaction came after Thai army chief General Prayut Chan-O-Cha made the coup announcement in a televised address to the nation, after declaring martial law earlier this week.

"The president condemns the seizure of power by the army in Thailand," a statement by Hollande's office said.

Hollande called for "an immediate return to the constitutional order and for a vote to be organised" as well as the need "for the fundamental rights and freedoms of the Thai people to be respected."

The coup came after months of political turmoil. The army banned gatherings of more than five people, summoned the ousted cabinet to report to the army and suspended the constitution -- except for the section related to the monarchy.

UN fears rights curbed after Thai army coup
GENEVA

The United Nations human rights office voiced deep concern at the Thai army coup on Thursday and said that martial law and military orders being imposed may infringe on fundamental freedoms.

Basic rights to freedom of opinion, expression and assembly are at risk, as well as guarantees of protection from arbitrary arrest or detention, it said.

"We remind the authorities of Thailand’s obligations under international human rights law in particular the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights which strictly limit the application of emergency powers," U.N. human rights spokeswoman Ravina Shamdasani said.

"We urge the authorities to take all necessary measures to ensure the fundamental human rights are respected," she said.

Thailand’s army chief General Prayuth Chan-ocha seized control of the government in a coup on Thursday, two days after he declared martial law, saying the military had to restore order and push through reforms after six months of turmoil.

The military declared a 10 p.m. until 5 a.m. curfew, suspended the constitution and told outgoing cabinet ministers to report to an army base in the north of the capital by the end of the day. Rival protest camps were ordered to disperse.

Britain 'concerned' by Thailand coup

LONDON, May 22, 2014 (AFP) - Britain expressed concern Thursday over the coup in Thailand and urged all sides to work together, but stopped short of condemning the seizure of power by the military.

The Foreign Office also urged tourists to follow travel advice after army chief General Prayut Chan-O-Cha announced the putsch on live TV, following months of political unrest.

"We are concerned at the announcement of a military coup in Thailand and are following developments closely," the Foreign Office said in a statement to AFP.

"We urge all sides to put aside their differences, and adhere to the values of democracy and the rule of law. This is clearly in the interests of the people of Thailand."

The Foreign Office added that the "ongoing political instability and the continued violence undermine Thailand's democratic framework."

French President Francois Hollande earlier condemned the coup but international reaction has otherwise been muted so far.
