It Is Not Hard To Imagine Internet Being Blocked Next

With the announcement just out about the Military disbanding the Senate and the likely uproar I could now very easily imagine that the Internet could be disconnected throughout Thailand...this would not be too much of a stretch of the imagination at this point.

Do they own or have control over the satellites which provide the feeds?

Difficult to do without that control.

They can request it.

But to control it ... that might be a bit of a stretch.

They can not interfere with the sat but they can instruct all mobile companies and TOT to cut it. Heaven forbid

in fact the most satellites are Thaicom and the uplink stations are in Thailand. You walk in with the gun and turn the feed off. No matter if BBC CNN or Bluesky.

Technically, it is likely impossible to cut terrestrial internet without cutting landlines, as they are bounded.

No very wrong. There are just a few gateways which scan all the traffic already (censor of naked couples having fun, gambling etc). You shut the gateway down and you have a domestic internet only.

You go to the internet service provider and they can cut all the user. I guess all the infrastructure is controlled by just 1-5 companies. So it shouldn't be difficult.

Most probably just "shutdown -h now" is all the root must type.

If you turn off the core routers which are hard wired into those backbone connections they will no longer work.

Hospitals use the INTERNET people would die. Banks use the INTERNET and people would have no money and die.

Airplanes use the INTERNET people would die. Boats use the INTERNET people would die. The stock market uses the INTERNET rich people would get poor and die.

"The stock market uses the INTERNET rich people would get poor and die." maybe they make an exception for the stock markets.

Egypt done it a while back, it is not impossible to imagine the internet being cut here if the anti-coup movement mobilises and organises itself by using twitter, facebook, Line etc..

It depends on how bad the situation gets and the Junta's perceived threat levels.

As far as satellites are concerned they cannot censor foreign uplinked stations, without an aggressive uplink jamming campaign (which believe me is very easy to do), this was also done in Egypt to Al Jazeera.

Lack of internet would damage the economy and affect those most pro-coup (with their iPhones) as opposed to those most anti-coup (with their 800 baht Nokias)..

Personally I feel they wouldn't go that far unless things really got out of hand..

Even during the London Riots the British government came very very close to shutting off social networks.. So it is not hard to imagine it happening here.

If I was the Junta, I would look at cutting mobile internet and fixed line internet around trouble spots first..

I just lost my TOT connection here in Jomtien around 11:30 PM .

So I'm on dtac 3G now. Yes I would think that TOT would be the first to get blocked , lets hope it was just a normal connection problem here.

am on tot not 1 second down in the last months

You should get in touch with TOT, there must be something wrong with your line biggrin.png

it goes down when it rains very heavy for quite a while but that hasnt happened since last year.

although it has rained quite heavily a few times recently.

my current connection is one thing i will miss when i skip.

If the grip of the military here was somewhat tenuous, I could see them cutting internet in

order to stop any organized resistance to them. But they appear to have an iron grip on

the country, so no need to anger everyone by turning the internet off.

Agreed. You see that little box, 27th from the left? That's the one! Snip, and it's all gone.

Most ATM's in Thailand, all banks, need internet connection to work. It wouldn't happen.

I thought they rely on leased line, MPLS and PACS (radio) gateways, I can't imagine a bank putting much faith into the public internet... although TIT!

You make a valid point, however satellite transponders can be easily turned off unless you as a customer are leasing space segment directly from a satellite provider. More to the point satellite Internet is the least preferred method of sourcing internet due to high cost and inherent latency. I believe all service providers in Thailand get their internet feeds via SEA-ME-WE 4, an optical fibre submarine communications cable system that carries telecommunications and provides the primary Internet backbone.
