I have been conned here in Thailand by a Thai lady who turned out not to be genuine.

No, really... it did happen and I guess I must be the first person this has ever happened to, rightcheesy.gif ? Anyway, life has improved thankfully and I'm slowly sorting out the financial mess. Along the way, 'we' bought a car (new Honda CR-V) that I paid cash for... luckily in joint names on the blue book etc. I kept this car off the road for a year as I didn't want it disappearing off to Isaan and have now got it back on the road, fully insured and tax'ed.

I had the insurance and tax done for me by a legal firm in Pattaya, although the car has Krungthep plates. I'm OK with the insurance cost - that was the same as the first year - but the law firm involved told me that because the car had not been tax'ed for almost fifteen months, there was an appreciable fine to pay. They reckoned this came out at around 11,000 bht, including the back tax and a payment for a tax disc into Feb 2558 (2015).

In order to avoid a charge of slander I won't say what I think/suspect of this cost but my Thai friends suggest that I've been done like a kipper. If anyone who is in the know can assist with guidance on what it should have cost, I'd really appreciate the help/information... now not in that part of Thailand and hence unable to wander in with friends and enquire locally at the appropriate tax office.

Many thanks in advance - Me

She wasn't a genuine Thai lady?? w00t.gif Yes, you must be careful, there are a lot of those around Thailand.. cheesy.gif In response to your post, bought and sold many cars there though never unregistered for so long. But have no clue what a "disc" is or why it costs 11,000b. Sorry, can't help..

As I understand the law on vehicle tax they have to be taxed even if not in use, when you tried to tax the car you had to pay any unpaid tax for previous years. The rate of tax due is shown in the back of the vehicles blue book so easy to calculate what was owed.

Not sure about the maximum fine but it cost me 500 baht. No way is the fine 11,000, that's more than the maximum fine for gang-murder.

That being said you have to back pay taxes too. Perhaps you misunderstood and the 11,000 baht included the fine and the back taxes.

You are lucky it wasn't a newish4 Door 3Ltr Pickup ... it would have been over 16000Baht for two years tax. As IMHO says ... if that is the back tax plus the forward tax (to 2015) then that's okay.

Thank you, one and all... a mixed bag of responses but all positive in their own special way clap2.gif .

I don't/didn't have the blue book (that or 2 million baht either, these are the subject of a separate whinge) but the legal 'representative' was able to get an official copy of the blue book generated and as I said, luckily my name was on the original. Especial thanks then for JAS21 and IMHO for suggesting that this value is about right... although wish I'd known that back in 2011! That and a couple of other things obviously... although she was a genuine girl, just in case anyone wants to cast nasturtiums about my preferences sick.gif . Honest, I now have a list of names who can confirm this.

Thanks again - Colin

ps: Please look out for my next post entitled 'For Sale: Honda CR-V, very, very low mileage - genuine reason for sale!'

pps: Yes I know, I can't sell the car without her signature... but we'll let the court settle that and I'll bring her other husband along for that facepalm.gif .
