Newborn in Thailand - Aussie passport application

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I have just had a newborn in Thailand (half aussie half thai) and would like to get the Aussie citizenship and passport asap so i can take her to my country of residence. As im only in BKK for a few days can anyone advise what the normal time frame would be? or if it is possible to get both citizenship and passport application done together?

Thanks in advance!

Got my daughter oz citizenship and passport in April, in Bangkok.Citizenship took 14 days and passport took another 10 after that. There was a few public holidays in between so maybe could be done quicker.Pretty sure you have to wait for citizenship before you can apply for passport.ie can't do both at the same time.It all is pretty straight forward, really couldn't be much easier.

If you are going to be in Bangkok only a few days make sure you also get your child a thai passport sorted so they can use that to exit Thailand.

I might consider getting a Thai passport as it's faster, however I'm assuming the baby will have to be with me? the baby is in sakhon nakhon so may be difficult

They can't be done together. Citizenship application first, as you need that grant number for application for passport. You can express a passport application, just as you would be able to if you lost your own.

Baby will need the Thai passport to depart Thailand given they are a thai citizen

Both parents have to be present for the Thai passport application. As well as the bubs of course. Thai passport takes 3 days to get and you can walk up and apply. Make sure you bring your passport of course.

As others said, the Australian citizenship takes 5 to 10 days (my daughters took two once submitted). Aus passport can only be applied for after the citizenship is granted and I'd leave 10 days for that.

Thanks all appreciate the helpful comments. I'll apply for the citizenship and see if there is anyway I can apply for the passport whilst overseas.

Went in to the Aussie embassy and unfortunately needed my wife's passport and my birth certificate to prove my citizenship which I do not have. I then went to try my luck at bang na to get a consent form so my wife can get a Thai passport without me, however because I'm a foreigner I have to be with both my wife and daughter. The consent rule apparently only applies to Thai nationals
