Ukraine crisis: Kiev faces halt to gas supply

(BBC) Gazprom has reaffirmed its Monday deadline for Ukraine to pay its debts after talks between Moscow and Kiev ended without agreement.

The Russian gas giant said it will cut Ukraine's supply if Kiev fails to pay $1.95bn (£1.15bn) by 06:00 GMT.

"We reached no agreement. The chances that we meet again are slim," Gazprom spokesman Sergei Kuprianov said.

Ukraine's discounted rate for gas was axed by Moscow after protests removed pro-Russia President Viktor Yanukovych.

You buy for discount rate and you don't pay on time good on ya to cut them of a deal is a deal. or let them pay full rate c o d.

Ukraine has to pre-pay for their gas now, not only was the discount deal terminated, but also their credit line was removed with the company. So they have to pay up front quarterly... They won't pay 3 months in advance, so they will be cut off.

Hard to tell if this will stimulate resentment against the Russians even more, or it will turn the people against the new neo-nazi government?

Whatever the public reaction, many homes are heated with gas and they also use a lot for cooking... They will all have to convert to electric for this and does the country have the resources to not only provide all the new appliances to the public, but can they also cover the massive surge in electricity demand?

The cut-off of gas supply by the Russian state-run Gazprom is not just about business; it's about politics. Some would say Gazprom is correct to withdraw discounts and require Ukraine to pay in advance for further gas supplies. Ukraine is not an ordinary customer. Ukraine's position is like that of Poland after invasion from Hitler's Germany being required to pay Germany for use of Polish train lines through the country into Russian front. So if you want to be technical about running a business, Russia needs to pay reparations to Ukraine for its invasion/land grab of Crimea and supplying weapons to East Ukrainian pro-Russian insurgents - say $5 billion and counting as Russian-supplied insurgents continue to bring ruin and death to Ukrainians. Russia ought to be supplying gas free for the next year.

This is really bad. This has nothing to do with business or money. Putin created this situation and is exploiting this dependency as a means of control or blackmail. Ukraine offered a solution, but Putin does not want a solution or money. He wants to turn Ukranians against its own government and force them to look to Russia for help. You just don't withhold necessary services or resources to innocent families and children to force a political position.
