coconutbar Posted June 19, 2014 Posted June 19, 2014 I gave a thai busker in patts a big chang out of generosity the other day he just looked at me blankly and sayed " only one". 1
Gringogazzer Posted June 19, 2014 Posted June 19, 2014 The man can play an instrument and has wit beyond a farang. He should be on the tele, Thai people will lap him up. 1
Popular Post beautifulthailand99 Posted June 19, 2014 Popular Post Posted June 19, 2014 As he was unnapreciative you should have said in that case you are not having any and suggested he may want to reflect on the universal law of karma. The best busker I ever saw (well really a no paid mall guitarist) was this guy... 3
Gringogazzer Posted June 19, 2014 Posted June 19, 2014 Only one...and today NONE. Maybe you can be his lyricist...I don't know if I just made that word up...
daveAustin Posted June 20, 2014 Posted June 20, 2014 What you do in that situation is quietly re-obtain said charity and drop one baht on the floor in front of him. 1
infinity11 Posted June 21, 2014 Posted June 21, 2014 like the beggars back home offer them real food and they decline
Costas2008 Posted June 21, 2014 Posted June 21, 2014 Did he say, "only one" in English or in Thai, coconutbar? How is your Thai?
Seastallion Posted June 21, 2014 Posted June 21, 2014 I would have taken it as he was appreciative but making a joke that it's not much of a drinking session with only one. An attempt at camaraderie with a farang. You said you acted "out of generosity". You weren't being very generous with your attitude. Try and see the best in people rather than be pessimistic.. 2
Emster23 Posted June 21, 2014 Posted June 21, 2014 seastallion makes a good point. Thais would prefer company when consuming the amber liquid. Maybe ask him to play "One is the loneliest number that you'll ever do". Skip "One toke over the line" for now.

On Youtube, search for Simon Leong. Young wizard, this guy.
somchaismith Posted June 21, 2014 Posted June 21, 2014 I gave 10 baht to a beggar near the temple at the end of Khao San Rd. She screwed up her face and asked for another twenty. 1

marko kok prong Posted June 21, 2014 Posted June 21, 2014 It could have been worse,he could have replied"no Leo". 1
namdocmai Posted June 22, 2014 Posted June 22, 2014 When i lived in a hotel in BKK i had the same beggar coming to me every day. One day i gave him a twenty but he got angry and wanted 100. I never gave him anything no more. But one day he saw me eating in a restaurant and he came in to beg for more. Since then i never give to beggars, only if they sit somewhere and don't annoy anybody.
MrWorldwide Posted June 22, 2014 Posted June 22, 2014 I dont find beggars quite as willing to engage in sparkling repartee as your busker friend - they're especially non-plussed by the phrase 'While you're down there ....' 2

quadman Posted June 22, 2014 Posted June 22, 2014 We were followed into a street side resto near petchabun a couple of weeks back, guy obviously high on something not drunk. He was looking for a hand out, and the wife decided for safety reasons (her logic, not mine) to offer him 10 baht, he looked at it and wandered away muttering.... I can buy noodles with that?! Those who need, or offer something, like that fine musician, or a Thai mother with Thai children, should be offered something IMHO, others get nothing, or in the case of the sky high guy I'm referring to above, given something small to leave!
quadman Posted June 22, 2014 Posted June 22, 2014 We also like to buy flowers from (and more importantly food for) the young children out strolling the streets for their money at night selling wreaths of flowers..... Chang beer for basic street hustlers? Not my style. Sorry if he was incapable of work, lost limbs, other physical limitations.... Just saying..... Can't give to everyone, but some giving to those trying and in need is meritorious I hope..... At least it makes me feel good to help in that way
