Could be a challenge - very few carpets here (not the munching kind) but the vaccums they like to sell would be better suited for carpets....no one seems to sell a decent bagless upright.......all 30 year old canister designs....

Actually there are a lot of rugs here - and carpets in commercial buildings. And they do have current model bagless canister units for sale (actually many made here) and with the bag purchase issue is what I have recently bought.

I bought a Electrolux bagless canister model that works well on carpeting and un-carpeted floors for under Baht 5000 at PowerBuy. They have higher priced, and presumably better quality models, if needed. It appears to have been designed more recently than 30 years ago ... although there's only so much you can do with a device whose primary function is to suck stuff up a tube. The dirt ends up in an easily emptied plastic container, not the filthy cloth bags found on older models. All the bits and pieces, including several filters and the dirt/dust container, are easily washable and there is an adjustment for power level and for the type of surface.
