Video Of Near Miss Between Two Planes At Barcelona Airport

Near misses happen pretty frequently, though it’s rare that they’re caught on video.

Check out this video of a near miss between an Aerolineas Argentinas A340-300 and UTAir 767-300 at Barcelona Airport on July 5, 2014:

An UTAir Boeing 767-300 (VQ-BSX) and an Aerolineas Argentinas Airbus A340-300 (LV-FPV) were involved in a runway incursion event at Barcelona Airport (BCN/LEBL), Spain.

Good job. Someone was keeping a good lookout. You can see the moment it goes nose up, throttles firewall, and the beautiful bird does what it's supposed to. It's easy to get distracted on short final and that was a great job.

Agree it's a good job. At night the plane on the ground would have so many flashing lights it might be easier to see.

Let's hope heads will roll for this!!!

Reminds me of the Tenerife air disaster in 1977(?) when a KLM ploughed into a taxiing Pan Am on the runway in dense fog.

By the way, why are they called near 'miss' and not a near 'hit'?

Quite often the aircraft on the ground get lost in the sea of lights and can be more difficult to see.

I think the camera is playing tricks to a certain extent on this video. It looks much closer than it really is.

Questions will however will be asked.

Did the controller clear the aircraft to cross the active runway, and if so did the crew accept the clearance. Did they then move quickly enough. A heavy aircraft taxying responds much more differently than a lightly loaded one and thus can seem like an eternity to get moving.

Did the crew enter the active runway without a clearance.

Did the controller issue the go around clearance or did the crew on short final decide to go around.

Good decision either way and a safe outcome was achieved.

The person videoing was almost certainly outside the Airport perimeter, so would have been using a lot of zoom which shows the landing plane out of perspective to the one on the runway which was crossing halfway down the runway.

Initial reports say the Boeing (landing) initiated a go-round at 200' Ft AGL.

ATC say:

Aena, the airport operator and ATC service provider, stated that the UTAir Boeing could have continued the landing without any danger, the separation was sufficient. Neither company filed any safety report
(I think that is Spanish for "we f***ed up").

It looks, to me, that the video has been faked. Is there an independent reliable report?
