Iran declares it not going to "kneel" as nuclear talks enter crisis

TEHERAN: -- Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif took to YouTube on Wednesday to deliver a message that Iran was ready to take steps to ensure its nuclear program remains peaceful but would not "kneel in submission" to do a deal with major powers.Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said Iran would need to significantly increase its uranium enrichment capacity, highlighting a gap in positions between Tehran and world powers.

As talks to resolve the long-running nuclear standoff resumed in Vienna, Zarif's remarks, delivered in English in a slick five-minute video, appeared to be a response to a US warning that Tehran has yet to prove that its atomic ambitions are peaceful, reports Reuters.

The statements highlighted how much work the negotiators from Iran and from the United States, France, Germany, Britain, China and Russia still have to do to meet a self-imposed deadline of July 20.

The sixth round of talks since February between Iran and the six powers formally gets under way in Vienna on Thursday morning, and on Wednesday Zarif met with US Deputy Secretary of State William Burns and European Union foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton, the six powers' lead negotiator, a US official said.

Washington and some of its allies have imposed sanctions on Iran over suspicions that its nuclear program is designed to produce weapons - a charge denied by Iran, which says it is only interested in producing electricity and other peaceful projects.

Sorry Iran... you are a despotic Islamic nation and can't be trusted with any form of nuclear capability.

I say drop a few nukes on them now and send a clear message to the rest of the rogue nations out there, if you pursue this, you will be wiped out.

It worked in Japan.

Right...lets kill off a few million people who have zero relevance in the decision making regarding developing these weapons.

That would be just, wouldn't it?

Is "Iran" the people? The leadership? The real estate?

Was Japan developing nuclear weapons at the time?

Was Japan a rouge nation?

I will say first that I don't want Iran to have nuclear weapons and want the West to continue to work to make sure they don't get them, but who is to say they don't have the right? America, UK, France, Russia, China, Israel, Pakistan, India, N. Korea etc. all have nuclear weapons. Time for those of us with nuclear weapons to reduce our stockpiles and make a good impression.

Lying, deception, extortion are all acceptable in international negotiations from Iran's history...what Iran really wants...is for the US to bend over so they can insert their form of foreign policy...

Iran has thousands of years of negotiating experience...the US...this current US gov't...apparently has little to none...

Iran needs to stop uranium enrichment capacity completely. There is no way that they can be allowed to remain right on the brink of developing nuclear weapons.

there is no way to prevent Iran from having eventually nuclear weapons. it's only a matter of time.

But of course you can be trusted with nuclear capacity.

So should Israel

Absurd response.

Has Israel threatened Iran's right to exist as a sovereign nation the way Iran has threatened Israel's right to exist as a sovereign nation?

Basically, the powers that control Iran are not to be trusted with nukes or the capability of nukes. End of.

Rubbish - that's the 'kneel down' result. Like most countries they are allowed to enrich uranium to feed nuclear power generators.

It's all about doing Israel's dirty work - a country with 200 or so nuclear weapons, a far more dangerous scenario than anything transpiring from Iran.

Even more absurd response.

Israel has threatened to attack many times and has the capability to do so with US assistance. Iran, apart from rhetoric, has no capability of attacking Israel. It only threatens Israel because Israel refuses to allow the Palestinians rule their own country.

The rulers of Iran are no more untrustworthy than the rulers of Israel which is now bombing Gaza and it's civilians to bits - again.

A very foolish statement. blink.png You should ask the surrounding countries that adamantly do not want Iran to get nukes about that. Diplomatic cables disclosed in 2010 revealed that the officials of Persian Gulf countries such as Saudi Arabia and Bahrain support a military attack against Iran to stop the Iranian nuclear program.

What surrounding countries should we ask? The only country close to them that I hear a peep out of is Israel and that is a nation of terrorists sanctioned by the western world.

The surrounding countries certainly don't want Iran to have nukes. They would also like to see Israel ridden of nukes too. Iran is not currently bombing an area under it's control.

But you missed the point - no one, including me, is suggesting that Iran become a nuclear weapons state.

Edited:

I see you've added more to your post. As the likes of Saudi & Bahrain (& Qatar) are currently fuelling a sectarian war in Syria with Iran in opposition to them, it's not surprising that Sunnis want to attack Shias.
