US prepared to broker Gaza ceasefire, says Obama

WASHINGTON: -- The US is prepared to broker a ceasefire between Israel and Palestinian militants in Gaza, President Barack Obama has said.

His comments came during a phone conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Mr Netanyahu earlier said Israel's operation was progressing as planned and "more stages were expected".

More than 80 Gazans have been killed since Israel's operation began on Tuesday, Palestinian officials say.

There have no reports of fatalities in Israel.

Israel says it hit more than 100 targets in Gaza on Thursday, while Palestinian militants have continued to fire rockets into Israel.

As far as I know, president Obama has not been providing Hamas with weapons and the Palestinains are the only ones targeting civilians and encouraging their own people to act as human shields.

The problem with his offer to broker a ceasefire is that neither side trusts him at all.

IDF just bombed a Palestinian cafe where some sports fans where watching the World Cup. Killed 8 civilians. They also just killed a family of 8, 5 of those being kids.

Now watch the 'justifiers' come out in force!

Sad, but the head of the household was Hamas and the Israelis issued a warning first. The terrorist's family left right away and were safe, but other Palestinians rushed into the house with children, to act as human "martyrs", and were killed when the missile hit. That has happened in several other cases as well. Hamas bears the responsibility for encouraging this behavior.

"Hello, this is the Israeli intelligence calling, We are bombing your house; you must evacuate the house immediately."

You need to read a few books before coming up with such ridiculous stories. Israel did not "steal" anything. The UN gave it to them and the Palestinian Arabs refused their portion of land or they would have had their own country for the first time in history. The Arabs started the conflict, started the terrorism, started all the wars and lost every single one.

Well, I'm sure if the cops came to your house and told you you could only live in 1 room, that the rest of the house was going to be used by someone else, you'd surly protest.

In a sense, Israel DID steal that land. It was stolen from the Palestinians and given to the Jews. They took the land knowing it was taken from someone else by force. Where I come from, if you knowingly accept something from someone that you know is stolen, you, too , are guilty of a crime.

Nonsense. The neighbors are the ones that have started wars with Israel over and over again and after 1948 Gaza was occupied by Egypt, not Israel. By the way the Jews were there long before the Arabs calling themselves Palestinians. You've got it all wrong. Back to class. biggrin.png

America needs to keep out of this, it needs some one who is neutral, unbiased and respected by both sides to broker a piece deal.

I bet American arms manufacturers would like this to escalate, does Obama own any shares.

Probably not, but then no doubt the republican party has just received a few large donation from arms manufactures.

So what if Israel finally does what a couple of UN resolutions told them to do decades ago:

Leave occupied land and don't keep building house there.

Well, there was also a UN resolution granting some of this land to Israel - and it not as if all the Palestinians and the Arab countries are keen on accepting that.

I agree that building of settlements on further occupied land, such as in most of the West Bank, is both wrong and a stupid move. Leaving unilaterally doesn't seem like such a great idea based on experience from Gaza Strip, and to some extent, Lebanon. These things need to be done with cooperation - sadly lacking from both sides.

I think most sane leaders and countries wouldn't want to touch that with a 10 foot pole.

Not many are unbiased, and none are respected enough for either side to let go of their illusions.

Obama couldn't broker peace between to first graders fighting over a King Dong.

Has anyone been successful in bringing peace to these two?

There hasn't been peace since Israel forced its way into the region and stole the land from the people living there.

Obama knows what is right, and he needs to follow his conscious on this.

Bill isn't too busy, I believe. Charges high, though.

Not that he did quite brought the peace, but perhaps a tad better than others on offer, such as Blair.

The Twelve Tribes of Israel formed the first constitutional monarchy in Palestine about 1000 B.C and they have maintained ties to their historic homeland for more than 3,700 years.. Whoever they "stole" the land from is long gone. rolleyes.gif

So the UN had to "give" something to them that they already had?  Sure.  rolleyes.gif

And by the way, "maintained ties".  rolleyes.gifrolleyes.gif

The Palestinians would be barking to trust ANY American government official, given that the US is overtly and covertly supporting israel, always has and always will.

If the US wanted to solve the problem, it could do so tomorrow by denying israel any military or financial aid till israel withdraws from the west bank and stops blockading Gaza.

It could then openly guarantee israel's existence with a treaty.
