webfact
Mo Chit Bus Terminal To Be Moved 'In 3 Years' By Khaosod EnglishMo Chit Bus Terminal in Northern Bangkok.BANGKOK— The state-owned Transport Company is looking to relocate the Mo Chit Bus Terminal in northern Bangkok in a move that is estimated to cost more than 1.5 billion baht.Wuttichart Kallayanamitr, managing director of the Transport Company, said the Bangkok Bus Terminal needs a larger space and a new location to meet the growing number of buses traveling between Bangkok and other provinces."We need a space larger than 100 rai," Mr. Wuttichart said. "As for the location, we may choose somewhere on Phaholyothin Road because the new terminal will handle transports from northern and northeastern routes, which are used by a lot of passengers."Furthermore, the State Railway of Thailand (SRT), which owns the plot of land where Mo Chit Terminal is currently located, has requested the Transport Company move because it needs the space to develop other projects.Mr. Wuttichart expects the plan will cost over 1.5 billion baht and suggested three ways to foot the bill: the state could bear sole responsibility for the budget, the state and the private sector could share the cost, or the private sector could pay for the relocation in exchange for rights to administer the new terminal for commercial purposes.Although the SRT requested the Transport Company move Mo Chit Terminal by next year, the relocation won’t be completed until three years from now, Mr. Wutthichart said. The Transport Company director added that the plan still needs formal approval from the military junta's National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO).Source: http://en.khaosod.co.th/detail.php?newsid=1405419548 -- Khaosod English 2014-07-
ChrisY1
Good.!!....this place is a dump.....certainly not what "quality" tourists want to arrive and depart from.
wirat69
Hope that they do a better job of selection than last time. Morchit 1 was on Bus, BTS and MRT but was closed and moved to Morchit 2 where there was NO public transport at commencement and even now, how ever many years later, is a bus route for the knowledgeable or a taxi fare/ripoff.... Guess there is no space left under BTS Makkassan Link station with all the mini-buses, so Phahon Yothin Road near BTS OK..... but is it too much to dream? jayjayjayjay
Huge space at Don Muang, but that's Army property. Oh, the Army is Thai right. Oh, that makes to much sense and why would the army let any other government department use "their" land, that makes to much sense. Let's put it somewhere else with only small access lanes and huge holes in the road totally inaccessible to general Bangkok population. Klong 36 in Rangsit maybe, about 80km from town, then a lot more money can be made from corrupt taxi drivers.
Lakegeneve
Moving MO Chit 2 was actually decided a few years ago due to the huge SRT Bang Sue Railyard redevelopment, the SRT needs its land back. More info here with maps, http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/653268-bangkoks-mo-chit-2-bus-terminal-to-be-relocated-ahead-of-aec/page-2 (obviously it was never going to happen before 20151) As with all projects in Thailand the Bang Sue railyard redevelopment was delayed but is now well underway. The Transport Ministry has targeted land land which is basically between DMK airport and Future Park Rangsit (not far from Zeer). The new INtercity Bus Terminal will be linked ot the SRT Dark Red commuter line which is under construction. The much delayed BTS MO Chit to Khoo Kut extension will also provide some proximate access, http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/406991-the-new-skytrain/ Ekkamai well also be moved to Bang Na, on some land diagonally opposite BITEC. It makes sense to move the regional bus terminals to the outer suburbs and have them linked by metro/commuter lines. noitom
And these traveling Thais are going to be "moved" to vans operating in the new terminal on Phayolyothin Road. That is the new vans with "stickers."
ezzra
3 Years, a lot can and will happened until than, new government, new junta, perhaps a coup or two, who knows? after all, this is Thailand, right?
oztaurus
Hopefully some of that 1.5 billion baht will be allocated to sensible traffic management around the site as well, unlike the Southern Bus Terminal - where buses from the south have to drive past the terminal, turn left, drive a couple of kilometres up the road, do a u-turn across traffic, drive back past the terminal again another couple of kilometres up the road, make another u-turn across traffic, then come back to the terminal. Surely a fly-over bridge would have made more sense and the fuel saving would have paid for it pretty quickly. TIT

mtls2005
There was an article in the BP ("Morchit buses to be spread all over Bangkok") in February which described a different plan (for all five stations). But this article makes it sound like they are back to an earlier plan? "Transport Co was previously looking for a site for one big main bus terminal covering at least 80 rai of land in northern Bangkok, but now thinks that only 50 rai for a smaller station are needed which will save money. A team from King Mongkut's University of Technology Thonburi has been hired to survey locations for this new bus terminal and will report back in two months." bendejo
You would think such a place would be planned, followed by the planning of traffic flow, etc. Doesn't sound like it. Same thing with both the old and 'new' Sai Tai Mai, sometimes buses have to travel several km past the terminal just to get to the approach. sjaak327
Hmm last thing I heared was that it was going somewhere near Rangsit. So the commute to the bus station alone would take an hour or so ...
digibum
Shhhhh... don't tell the thieving taxi drivers that refuse to use meters. Maybe they'll just hang out at the old bus station thinking they need to buy more amulets for good luck. Might take a few years before they figure it out if we all keep quiet. tukkytuktuk
Good.!!....this place is a dump.....certainly not what "quality" tourists want to arrive and depart from.Hit the nail on the head!Horrid place full of poor people carrying boxes of Chang and Leo stringed up and large Louis Vuitton bags. How dare they, demolish it and make way for the upper class. No only joking! It will be great to have a new terminal to take the missus off to Issarn. Hopefully a better coupon meal area and comfortable waiting area. Travelled a lot from mo-chit and most times its been fine but I always dread going their cause its so lo-so. The half way rest stops also need a revamp. When I went to Chasing Mai we stopped at a beautiful rest stop with delicious food. But halfway to Surin we stop at some dirty patrol station where a 40 year old ladyboy with a beard serves you a plate of slop. Burgh.

ratcatcher
There is a huge chunk of vacant land right across from Don Muang Airport., adjacent to the SRT tracks and easily accessible from most directions. But having a bus station in a location convenient to road, train and air access does not make sense. https://www.google.com/maps/@13.8793215,100.5746745,4942a,20y,29.21h,44.06t/data=!3m1!1e3 Edited October 21, 2016 by ratcatcher
BSJ
Why move it? It's a stinky, grotty <deleted> hole that is the perfect location for the stinky, grotty, rusty, unreliable and poorly maintained buses that frequent that location.
JAG
They're going to move to a new 100 rai + bus terminal in three years. And they don't even know where it is going to be built yet?

CLW
Does someone know why at the time of construction the MRT line was not extended or have a station at Mo Chit bus terminal? It's not that far from Kampeang Phet station...

When the new Morchit was built the MRT was not even built ,or they might have just started building it, the old Morchit is now where the sky trains are parked up . Why on the original plans they was not a line built to Morchit 2 ,where one was needed ,we shall never know . As for Morchit 2 I have used it since it was opened ,never any problems ,buy my ticket wait for my bus ,nearly always leaves from the same gate ,and away .
