Typhoon Rammasun intensifies in the region

BANGKOK, 18 July 2014 (NNT) – An intensifying Typhoon Rammasun, with wind speeds reaching up to 160 mph, is heading toward southeastern China.

The typhoon is expected to make landfall in Hainan province later today and hit the area with winds up to 150 mph, making it equivalent to a Category 4 hurricane. Thai travelers planning to visit the region are urged to closely follow weather updates.

Meanwhile, the southwestern monsoon covering the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman Sea will bring more heavy rains to Thailand’s upper and southern parts.

Over the weekend, many provinces including Nong Khai, Udon Thani, Chiang Mai, Trat, and Phang Nga are expected to be battered by storms.

Strong winds will generate up to 4 meter high waves near coastal provinces. Small boats should be kept ashore during this upcoming weekend.

Most of Bangkok and its vicinity will also experience thunderstorms and heavy rains.

So how does this affect the water drought this year which has been thought to happen?

The rain will be traveling sideways so fast it won't touch the ground.

whistling.gif This Typhoon is intensifying rapidly out over the ocean before It makes land.

The latest satellite photos show it heading to the east and northeast of the formerly projected landfall.

Now it appears it will just miss the island of Hainan and instead make landfall in China.

If that is the case, the effect on Thailand will be less than previously thought.

This Typhoon is getting bigger and stronger rapidly.

Where it will go is like the joke, "Where does the 600 kilo Gorilla go?"

Answer, "Just about anywhere it d- -n well wants to".

But right now the main effect of the wind and rain is going to be in China, and not affect Thailand that much.

But who can really tell, this is now a BIG Gorilla.

And it will go where ever it wants to.

Which is seasonal and not unusual this time of the year, very little to do with the typhoon...thumbsup.gif

News stories forecasting storms but lacking maps always seem lacking. coffee1.gif This may assist in conceptualizing the expected impact to those in Thailand.

It looks to be sufficiently north as to mean only an inch or so extra rain for the northern provinces. Regular monsoons are usually about the same pattern
