Military officials to dominate National Legislative Assembly

THE NATION

Up to 140 of NLA's 220 members to be from armed forces : source

BANGKOK: -- THE NATIONAL Legislative Assembly will be heavily dominated by military officers from all the Armed Forces - between 125 and 140 of the total 220 NLA members - according to a source familiar with the matter.

Among the appointed members of the legislative body will be 60 officers from the Army, 20 from the Navy, 20 from the Air Force, 20-30 from the Thai Armed Forces Command, and between five and 10 from the Defence Permanent Secretary's Office, the source said yesterday.

Another five to 10 NLA members will come from the Royal Thai Police and the rest will include former senators, academics, non-government-organisation workers, and businesspeople, according to the source.

A list of the appointed 220 NLA members, selected by the ruling National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO), has been submitted to the junta's leader, General Prayuth Chan-ocha, who is expected to forward it for royal endorsement this week, the source said.

The interim legislative body is expected to convene its first meeting around the middle of next month.

Deputy NCPO chief General Adul Saengsingkaew yesterday inspected the Parliamentary Office's readiness to prepare for appointments and the convening of NLA members.

He met with senior officials of the Parliamentary Office for about an hour. Adul said afterwards he was satisfied with the preparations.

Earlier, Jade Donavanik, dean of Dhurakij Pundit University's faculty of law, said the NLA should set a new bar for quality deliberations that could challenge politicians.

"Someone has said politicians are the country's main problem. Their speeches always consist of inappropriate words. NLA members are like people's representatives.

"They should deliver quality speeches to set themselves apart from those with poor practices,'' he said. Lawmakers should not fall into the trap of majority rule.

He said they must work closely with the National Reform Council and establish clear targets, including public participation.

"Even if they are not direct representatives of the people, they must ensure that there isn't a gap between them and the people,'' he said.

The NCPO might have a tough time selecting representatives from various professional societies, the private sector and civic groups, he added.

"lawmakers should not fall into the trap of majority rule"     dirty old democracy has no place in the "new" govt.?

Business should be conducted quickly as there will be a resounding " Yes Sir " to everything the likely new PM says.

An armed forces majority in Govt certainly works in Burma.

Welcome to Thailand where we put the Generals in general elections.

Who cares if 500 generals are running the job, if the country prospers--Thai people happy, zero corruption.  As for the remarks all the time re--Burma-hand salutes-and the rest, keep worshiping the past regime that were kicked out for everything imaginable. Any improvement for the time being is terrific, who needs elections-Thai fashion- (because that's democracy) not in Thailand-elections here, until complete reforms are initiated are useless.

Yes just look at how the armed forces are run with regards cronyism, procurement, corruption etc- it should fill you with confidence that these big wigs who have no desire/ability to clean out even those they are in direct command of in the armed forces, are expected to do it for the whole Nation. cheesy.gif

Whatever they have done or what you believe they have done is up to them.  In Thailand we do not have people like our Burmese lady here.

If they run the job transparently -good bookkeeping have independent watchdogs-good.  If we do not have them, I will ask you  Who would you have do the job???  Who do you know here that is whiter than white?? not much alternative is there, for now go with the flow, unless you come up with alternatives.

Any body of persons put in to run the government --now matter how many you nominate I could spend all my time poking holes/ disagreeing/objecting this is the easiest thing for anyone to do as we see with the PTP cry babies on TVF.

Most posters objecting to any opposition of PTP rarely post up front fresh ideas/be a critic of that regime/ all the time they home in on other posters to argue and pick at objections. Here with the army the same/ few are saying this is better/that's a smart move--again a repeat of before home in to pick at and cry down the armies efforts to clean up.

Healthy criticism is brilliant, not criticize for the sake of it.  Good opposition is vital unless the motive is to disrupt.

Business should be conducted quickly as there will be a resounding " Yes Sir " to everything the likely new PM says.

While I confess to feeling that the military coup did prevent Thailand from open warfare, and I do feel that most of the steps being taken should have a positive (if only short run) affect, there are reservations. From reading Thai history, well, here we go again. This coup is consistent and very understandable with Thailand's past political history. There are limits to any reforms that can be accomplished. One cannot move too quickly or step on too many toes before the backlash. Note that the call for listing of assets has receded, not only for politicians but calls for listing military individuals assets are too much to expect. Yes, some good can come out of this short run but these reforms will not change Thailand in the long run. Thus we will see a return of the social and economic stress that preceded the coup. Give it some time, change the names of some of the players and....

Regardless of your sarcasm smutty one, look at the improvements they have made in a mere 2 months, things are way better now than they have been here in years !!

Sour grapes because UNO WHO has been kicked out with shame and loss of face. A farce was the PTP.

Ha Ha  no high speed to C.Mai, for the family?

crooks being caught politicians being raked over the coals, trying to end corruption, disruptive elements gagged--Good- constructive critics not gagged-encouragement needed, the list grows. Like it or lump it --PTP finished ---it's a new day/start.

No doubt there will be little support from your fraternity even for the better governing, only snide and slagging as before.  Get with the norm or miss the boat up to you.

Lets give the boys a chance and see where it goes. The whole system here has been based on automatic promotions and greased palms, some might say, I couls not possible comment on that. The Armed Forces are not likely to get much attention to that until things are more advanced, the Police look like they are higher up the list and lets face it its a big list its going to take time.

We are all used to democracy western style, which is not what has been going here, its a different brand of democracry in name only. I am no fan of coups but the current people in power seem to be doing a fine job as I see it, we of course, can make comments but cannot vote, the Thais who can that I know all seem very happy with the Military in control, for the time being, it will be interesting to see where we are in 18 months time when an election might have taken place or be imminent.

You really are falling for it hook, line and sinker arent you?  You believe everything you are being fed by a regime that prevents freedom of speech and needs to undertake charm offences to buy support.  Google Indo-Pacific Review and open your eyes and mind.

I thought at first that the irony of your comment with respect to the thread had completely passed you by, but then I see you qualify it with a "it will be interesting to see where we are in 18 months time when an election might have taken place or be imminent", so perhaps you haven't quite fallen for it all, unlike some on this forum who are completely smitten.

I recently took my family to a dinosaur museum.  No admission charge for Thais because of the charm offensive.  There was a large free show with coyote girls in my town, again part of the charm offensive.  Yet the Junta proposes preventing political parties from contesting elections with populist policies!  Hypocrisy springs to mind.  But to some this is perfectly acceptable because General P appears on television, with a nice friendly smile and says all the right things.

Google as much as you want, you want the PTP back your welcome, I only believe what I see in happening to the nation and it's well being.

At this moment in time in 2 months tremendous strides/inroads have been carved out. The last government WAS a regime. This is a clean up.

You give me a list of persons suffering from freedom of speech ??/ NOT disruptive bodies that have been gagged, this was necessary for the time being.

Take your blinkers off, again another with sour grapes, what is your problem with the spring clean ?  did you object when your mother had one.??  I never did I encouraged her.  I didn't google to see if she was right.

Well he is interested in attending meetings----if you get my drift  The general is not out on trips globe trotting to avoid questions at vital times.---who wants an amnesty for all ??  ha ha, it was for our dear Thaksin, you see elections are no good --UNTIL reforms/clean-up/serious changes are made.  PTP are museum species now, the same as dinosaurs.  A lot to think about isn't there----good and bad in all,  I settle for this FOR NOW.

Keep googling Fab if it suits -you still avoid points of my posts about your reasons for not proposing only nit picking. As you are homing in on this one.

Take a look at yourself and your motives for posting,   Has anything the army has done that pleases you ???  if so talk about it --lets discuss.

How does one spell military dictatorship in Thai?

How can there be any debate about anything when officers must follow orders?  There is certainly no need to worry about the "rule of the majority," as that is simply not how any military works.

But then, there are people who have escaped the "black / white" scheme of thinking. (Either you are red or yellow, either you are for NCPO or for Shinawatra...) and actually didn't like the previous regime and now have some problems with the "true happiness and true democracy" as advertised.

True democracy but people have no saying? True happiness but scared to open your mouth? Not my idea of happiness and democracy.

It is not possible to hold a full frank discussion on this forum (or elsewhere in Thailand) due to restrictions imposed by the ruling military junta - a fact that seems to have passed you by, or the knowledge of such restrictions you are deliberately suppressing, for reasons best known to yourself.

So the old Greek joke is true, there is going to be a General Election and we all know the Generals who are going to be elected.

Still it could get worse like the old Soviet Union joke.

Its been announced that last night someone broke into the Kremlin and stole next year's election results.

Edited by pitrevie

If the Thai people truly want their country to be run by a military/oligarchy dictatorship, I only wish for the people to live long and prosper. There is nothing wrong for people to trade their rights and freedoms for financial security and personal safety. But that's not a reason to call such a country a democracy anymore than countries with one-party systems of governance like Iraq under Sadaam Hussein, North Korea, Cuba, or China that could be called  democracies. Maybe here we can call it "Thaiocracy," not to be confused with hypocrisy.
