BANGKOK: -- The State Railway of Thailand launched the “Ladies and Children Car” service on Friday with satisfactory result, said Mr Thanongsak Pongprasert, director of train service.

Advance bookings were beyond expectation, he said. Advance bookings are as follows: 27 seats for Bangkok-Sangai Kolok route; 25 seats for Bangkok-Ubon Ratchathani route; 11 seats for Bangkok-Nong Khai route and full bookings for Bangkok-Chiang Mai route.

Mr Thanongsak said that if the service has proven to be not popular in any route, adjustment will be made to fit in with the situation.

However, all seats of the above routes were fully booked for the long weekends during August 8-12.

The “Ladies Only” car is manned by all-woman staff. Boys are allowed on the cars if they are less than ten years old and not exceeding 150 cm in height.

The service was introduced after a 13-year old girl was raped and murdered in a Bangkok-bound sleeper train by a railway staff in mid-July.

A temporary "flexible" Thai marketing gimmick. Management and irregular operations at the railroad is not followed by the press or the law. Merely a marketing gimmick is implemented to fend off negative public reaction.

Alternative thought:  A positive step in the right direction, which seems to be welcomed by a significant number of passengers.  Passengers who know what they want better than I know what they want.

Just a bandaid measure.  As stated, do something, anything, to take the heat off.

I think the STR needs to be disbanded.  A new organization to oversee and run the train service in Thailand is very badly needed.  The STR, like the Thai polce, are a national disgrace.

In six months, there will be no more of this -- a knee-jerk cosmetic reform that leaves no one feeling safer on a train.

i wonder how much male support the all female staff will get if some aggressive, ' queue jumper ' type Thai man sees empty seats and decides that's where he's going to sit.

The Railway Police aren't at every station and the male railway staff ... ?

I forgot to add that I have seen some Thai ladies that Tyson in a bad mood wouldn't challenge but i don't know how many are employed by SRT.

Once again you haven't failed to disappoint with your ability to slag off anything Thai.  Do you understand what "negative" means?

You're privy to inside information from SRT, or just wild conjecture?

Most likely you will be proven right by the facts.

The one thing (among many other) that Thais are notorious for is lack of consistency in applying and enforcing rules and/ or laws.

Except: when it comes to the control of foreigners and how perfect and consistent foreigners residing in the country have to be or else...

Sorry apologists, but history, reality and facts are not in your favor this time.
