Got lost, could not find my way home.and all things listed in OP s post

regards Worgeordie

It's not really 'Thailand', but more Lanna for me ! Great people, history and culture.

My father had been posted to Bangkok as a diplomat during the 1960's and my parents enjoyed taking my sister and I to CM for holidays. I lived and worked in Thailand, based in Bangkok, throughout the 1980's & 1990's. When it came time to retire, I decided where in the world I would like to retire to. CM was number 1 on my list and I haven't looked back since. wai2.gif

I got off at the wrong subway station and hadn't another token. I was hungry and found a patch of interesting mushrooms and partook of them. Life seemed really colorful after that, but still looking for the subway station and I still don't have a token.

I like living where other people plan and save for a year to go on vacation. I like seeing people coming from all over the world, including Russians, Chinese, and the famous Oz Bogans! Sit outside at Black Canyon or Hotel M enjoying a cup and you will eventually see an example of every kind of people.

As I ride around town on my battered old Trek, I ask myself every day if there is anyplace I would rather be, would anyplace be "better" for me. And the answer is No, this is it.

Our meat-package infests this space-time nexus because the infinitely-sided dice of serendipity roll snake-eyes continuously.

Apologies. I asked the question the wrong way. What motivated you to leave where you were, not what pulled you to Chiang Mai.

In the spirit of several responses above, some examples:

1) A hellfire (drunk, whatever) of a spouse I could not stand anymore.

2) Walmarts recalled my membership card.

3) My mother-in-law.

4) A warrant for my arrest.

5) Hiding from the revenue service.

6) Outrage at becoming ticketed for not cleaning up my dog's poop.

7) An outrageous cash offer for my house (pre-2008) and an itch to spend the money

8) A call-up of the Israeli reserve

9) Outstanding moving vehicle violtions and fines

10) Too damn cold in my igloo

11) Having to separate recyclables and the store was out of trash bins

12) Needing to get out of Vegas before the casinos realized I was counting cards

13) Got on the wrong train and ended up in Heathrow where a tourist discouraged with waiting in line gave me her ticket

Have you answered your own questions yet mapguy?

Yep, you apparently missed it.

So I did, now if you're intentions are so honourable, why make all the negative suggestions for everyone else?

Thailand is notorious for easy sex for horny elderly males with some cash for girls, boys or in-betweens. There are plenty of them around here.

In recent years, a fair number of foreign females have settled here, either with children or retired. Why?

How about "I couldn't stand my "nanny state!"

Another one might be that I couldn't stand my wife or children any more!

Or, I owe back taxes!

Or, the law was after me!

Or, I think I can live more cheaply here, and I will trust my good health to some god of good fortune.

Or, maybe some people are just dreaming to settle in some perceived "paradise."

Why did you leave, not why you came here!

Huay Tung Taew is a nice enough beach. The only sharks are the food vendors.

Why did you leave, not why you came here!

Did I miss some thing.

You did not miss anything, it often takes 3 pages of posts before the OP figures out what they were on/off about at the start, some never have much of a point anyway so don't worry.

Because...the place is just nice?

OK, CM is what 500km inland so no beaches, but it's just a good mix of traditional Thai and modern society.

I know many of you won't be aware of a 6am start, but wander around the Chiang Mai Gate at 6am, monks everywhere.

The mix just works for me, and it's not as busy as BKK but with all the mod cons.

It's the most civilized province in Thailand.
