brucefarang Posted August 25, 2014 Posted August 25, 2014 hHave loads of mature Pappaya with excellent fruit- One part of a twin stem plant found lying on the ground looks like some form of rot-inside of stem watery and very soft-obviously couldn't support the trunk any more. The same seems to be happening to another twin -we have propped it up. Both affected trees have good fruit, the soil is well drained and no sign of any obvious infection- Any thoughts on this? Thanks.
Jotham79 Posted August 25, 2014 Posted August 25, 2014 Are they twin stem because 2 seeds were planted close together? If so I would remove the smaller of the 2 stems. It could just be that the stem could not support the weight and you need to thin a few fruit. Unless you lose the second stem on a couple of plants, I wouldn't worry. Occasionally in the rainy season you can have plants fall over.
kickstart Posted August 25, 2014 Posted August 25, 2014 There is a root rot with Papaya ,have a look at the following, www.padil.gov.au/pests-and-diseases/pest/main/136594.+ other web sitesAre you shore the land is well drained ,we lost 80% of our papaya last year ,to wet, thay do not like getting there feet wet.
TPI Posted August 25, 2014 Posted August 25, 2014 What might help is to place a couple of bits of concrete around the base, anywhere inside the drip line! Papaya need a lot of lime and the lime that dissolves out of the concrete seems to solve a lot of problems....root rot, rot in the top of the tree, soft trunk! Give it a try!

Agriculture lime or dolomite is widely available in Thailand.
