You mean the same type of idiots who comment on posts and thus contribute? clap2.gif

Maybe I touched a nerve or someone's house

It's a discussion board I am having a discussion if to dog like it no one is forcing you to read it

I don't have too much time on my hands but I have a few minutes here and here to make a post

1st thing i think of is "Thank god i'm home it's great to be back" What is your point OP?

I agree sketcher. Those are usually my first thoughts as well.

However, those buidlings highlighted by BicgC are terrible. Totally illegal I believe (flat roofs) and built on a slope.. A huge eyesore.

That's my point

I am just interested in what people's first impressions of these buildings are

Trying to word it slightly subtly don't want people to think I am attacking their business but I cannot help but wonder what people make of these specially when flying over them when landing in samui airport

Ok worded differently

What's your first impressions of these buildings which you normally see when landing in samui depending on the flight path

First thing I think is; too bad it doesn't look like it did in 1986.

Yes but take away those buildings and you just have jungle style mountain

The first thing I think of is, "now I'm on vacation". My wife and I travel to Samui at least every other year. I love the approach by air and you have the coolest airport around. We take a van to Chaweng, stay by the sea and relax. Nice variety of restaurants, we don't shop much, things are a bit cheaper in Chiang Mai. I guess the only complaint I have is how badly the street that runs from the beach access to the part of Chaweng where most of the action is, smells. I mean, it stinks, the slime from the garbage prevents one from walking on the sidewalk in places. Other than that I can't think of anything I don't like. PS. I love to look down on Lamai from the viewpoint, and the beach at Mae Nam bay.

Have u been back since central has opened

Completely changed Chaweng beach road

I reckon it is defiantly a plus to samui

Cheers

That's the kid of comment I was looking for

I agree a total mess ! This project was actually the one that started the stricter planning laws years ago as it was seen by someone from the Royal family and they complained. It was going to be removed but it never happened and now it's getting larger crazy !!! Hopefully the new wave of laws will change that !!!

This along with the new development in Throng Krut should be removed from this beautiful island.

Big C I totally agree with you. These buildings are an abomination and creates the impression of a complete and utter disregard of the Building rules and regulations by the developer. in other words the impression that "anything goes here" (given the right incentives).

One can only hope that the newly formed Government investigation commission will examine the legality of many of these and similar structures here, and whilst on the subject should take a peek at the siting of the new Koh Phangan airport and the "War of the Worlds" hotel on the South of the island.

Big C was being built when we were there last year, but it wasn't finished as I recall. I do enjoy the time we spend there, so many people in Thailand say "it isn't what it was, you should have been here 20 years ago". It probably isn't what it was, Chiang Mai isn't, but many things are better. Unfortunately traffic isn't one of them.

BigC was finished seven years ago.

Perhaps you mean Central Festival.

Thats the other thing that forget to mention they just look dangerous of all things. I was taught from a young age never to build a house even 200 meter from a cliff due to erosion. yet else are built on a cliff.

Now the builds might be save but i personally would want my own preffsional buiding surveyed if i was to purchase a property like that though i shall not because i cannot afford it for 1 but in theiory

saying that are there building surveyors on the island i have never seen one. plus one that is not corrupt and qualified and not just a person who has worked on a building site before who can blag it

If the building code you are referring to is no flat roofs then that's just stupid. The fact its in landslide territory is not a good thing though.

I don't see it as an eyesore. Its a building. The litter along the roads is more of an eyesore to worry about.

What baffles me is that another permit seems to have been issued to build more of the same. Amazing Thailand.

Not only more of the same - some of the new ones appear to be larger. sad.png

Ugliest thing by far on Samui are the electricity cables. Samui has changed a lot in the last decade that I have known it, but those pesky cables are still their.

If you really think Samui is getting ugly, move away for a while and when you return you will appreciate the place more.

You obviously have not seen me first thing in the morning! crazy.gif

To be fair - the cables are not unique to Samui. They are all over Thailand.

Having just flown back to the island I observed what you first see from the plane and passing big Buddha from the air all you see is thousands of houses and zero greenery! Unlike flying past koh phangnan which still looks lush and green. Pointless harping on about how the island used to be it is what it is now, some places ruined by never ending building other areas still lovely and unspoilt. That's the price islands are paying all over the world for tourism IMO.

Parts Koh Phangan are changing too, but remember that a good proportion of KP is National Park... Having said that, in reality Samui is very much "green" once one gets off the coastal roads, especially the north and east sides... The south and and west sides so far do not have as much development (other than Nathon of course) .

The centre of Samui, is very much farms (small and large) and some areas are still "jungle" .... unfortunately or maybe fortunately, not many people ever see those areas.... wink.png

It's all really a "catch 22" we want to have amenities for shopping and things to do other than swinging like Tarzan in the jungle... but development happened to quickly in some areas without a lot of long term planning...in the early years. I think if any one looks at the new road construction between Nathon and Hau Thanon, some longer term planing has gone into the new road construction. thumbsup.gif

Part of the new high way.... for those who have not ventured out of the metropolis of the east side!

For the beach "bashers", there are still many beaches around Samui and some on KP that are still very nice... It's just that they are not on everyone's door step... seek and thou can find! thumbsup.gif

What baffles me is if people are building really expensive properties for sale then surely you would want to make it as legal as possible or it shall be harder to sell

If built in a land slide area then people with common sense would not spend 30 mill on a place like that unless the salesman or woman has a sliver tongue and could sell you blood and trick u into believing it's wine

Just don't understand why people would rather pay under the table for an illegal building than worry as to what shall happen later

You think those places are on a steep hill? Have you seen the ones behind Bongoes on the Choeng Mon-Chaweng road? Where they have carved out the hillside above them? Now that it scary.
