BANGKOK, 28 August 2014 (NNT) – The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has successfully relocated more than 1,000 Thai citizens out of Libya so far while 169 people insist on remaining in the war-torn country.

Mr Sek Wannamethee, Director-General of the Department of Information and Spokesperson of the Foreign Ministry, affirmed that the evacuation of Thais from Libya has been ongoing. He said the Thai Embassy in Tripoli as well as assistance teams in Djerba and Tunis, Tunisia, have been working together to arrange flights for the evacuees to return home.

Based on the latest statistics, out of 1,343 Thai nationals in Libya, 1,157 people have been moved out of the country and 73 are currently in Tunisia, waiting to make their journey home. Coordination is being made to bring out another 17 Thais.

However, authorities reported that a total of 169 people have confirmed their intent to stay in Libya. The group has been informed that should they change their mind, they will be welcome to contact the Thai Embassy in Tripoli for assistance anytime.
