With United stopping flights, I've been doing the BKK-Narita leg on ANA. Usually, I only have one bag going that way, so no biggie, but this time, I have two bags to carry. I just noticed on my itinerary that I have a limit of one bag. I called United in the US, and they told me that was ANA's policy. That sounded weird as I get at least two bags on all Star Alliance flights. It was too late to call ANA's local office today for tomorrow's flight, so I called the US office. They told me that yes, their policy is one bag, but if I show my Star Alliance Gold card, I do get two bags.

If this is not the case, I will post here again in the morning. :)

Within the pacific area you are only allowed 1 bag on any airlines. However if it is a transpacific flight, you are allowed 2. Been flying here for 23 years.

Standard allowance is one checked bag on ANA economy, even on tran-pacific flights. However, currently they are running a promo of two bags on economy for their long-haul flights. Don't know how this works on their codeshare flights.

I get two bags on any Star Alliance airline, whether a regional or transoceanic. At least on Thai, Singapore, Shenzhen or Asiana. This was the first time it's been on my itinerary, though, that I only get one bag. For European flights, I get the two bags on Lufthansa, Turkish, and Austrian. FOr United, I get three, so on my return flight, even though my last leg recently has been with ANA, it get the three bags of 70 lbs each.

However, we'll see in a few hours if I do get my second bag

Sounds like you have a certain status on Star Alliance but be careful with this. To be clear when you board in BKK you are under NH (ANA) baggage policy, whatever that is related to your status.

If you return from North America on United you are under UA baggage policy, at time of check in, which may differ. (While back you got 2 x 50 pounds free of charge, UA probably charges non-status pax for second bag now due to the charge extra for everything boom).

If connecting on NH in Tokyo to BKK they cannot say now for example, "you get one 13KG bag only" and try to impose excess baggage charges mid-route. This happened to Japanese GF once and she had to get a supervisor involved to get it resolved because the ground staff gal in Japan was WRONG. I had an issue with a bicycle once on TG (also connecting in Japan), which the accepting carrier, old Continental Airlines, accepted as a free checked bag.

If your trip starts outside the United States the total baggage allowance, including the domestic US flights, is dependent of the operating first carrier or the most significant carrier. Your e-ticket receipt should show the exact baggage allowance for each of the flight segments.

Star Alliance airlines have different baggage allowances. For example, on international flights, United and ANA allow one bag of 50 lbs. Asiana allow two bags of 70 lbs each. On domestic routes, UA allow zero free bags. If you have a Star Alliance Gold card, you get one bag in addition to the normal allowance. That means for UA international flights in economy, you get two bags for free (1+1). If you are flying UA domestic economy, you get one bag free (0+1) with a gold card.

I am almost sure the 2 bag to/from the U.S. is an FAA policy required by all airlines flying to/from the U.S..

Baggage allowances are commercial rules set by airlines. FAA regulations regarding baggage concern only security screening/acceptance and carriage of hazardous materials.
