Featured Replies

High hotel rates unlikely to fall Myanmar's hotel room rates, which average about US$160 per night, should remain unchanged in the medium term due to the slow completion of new properties and continued influx of visitors, according to New Crossroads Asia.

Is that the price of a hotel in Bagan? I would love to go there, but I would not pay that If the rates are high in Bagan, I assume they would be along the way also, say a few days in Yangon as I travel about a bit.

Someone told me that hotel owners have an annual meeting to agree about prices for each category. No wonder prices are still high.

Hotel prices in Myanmar may be high, but where do they come up with an "average" of US$160? Or are they assuming the only hotels in Myanmar consist of the 5-star places in Yangon, Mandalay and Bagan?

What a crotch of an article. Yangon hotel prices are indeed high, but the average is certainly not anywhere near that level - perhaps US$60-80 if you take into account the full range of places from US$10 (10000 Kyat) dumps to US$400 (400,000 Kyat) palaces, such as the Strand Hotel.

Hotel rates in smaller towns which the writers of the Nation article have likely never been to, including Myawady, Mu-se, Tachilek, Kengtung, Lashio, Kawkareik, Pathein, Meiktila, Kathoung and just about any other smaller town you can think of can be anywhere in the US$10-50 range. There are rarely any more expensive options than this, as the very best places in most of these towns are likely no better than 2-star.

In Dawei and Myeik there are US$15-30 places, but most of the better and newer business and leisure hotels quote anywhere from US$40 up to US$100 or so. In Hpa-an, Moulmein, Kyaikhto and other second tier places, you can find anything from an US$8 bedbug infested dump to a US$70-80 3-star standard room with a small a-la-carte or buffet breakfast.
