I work at a thai govt uni. Months ago they asked me to nominate the hospital that I want to use in the case of medical issues.

I've since been told that I have to wait 3 months to get the card. Is this legally correct or B.S?

They just told me that the 3 month wait time is not from the actual contract start date but from the Work permit start date. Nothing surprises me in the LOS. Is this correct?

If you have any insight into this matter I would appreciate your comments.

I think it's actually because rather than giving you a medical checkup to determine any pre-existing conditions etc, they have a 3 month stand down period where you're ineligible for healthcare.

I might be wrong on that, but that's the situation which a colleague of mine found themselves in earlier this year (He was hospitalized for a week but wasn't covered by the school's policy (Insurance not social security though) the school paid him regardless but it took a while because the insurance company didn't want to pay because it was within the stand down period).).

I am covered with government health insurance, had to wait 4 months before it was approved.

But there have been issues with greedy admin staff i. "forgetting" to deduct the SS contributions. Getting cash is better, isn't it (especially when there won't be a receipt, ever). ii. When I needed treatment, the hospital had no record and I had to pay the private rate for the treatment.

You better check the hospital has you in their system.

Oh, and they love to take SS contributions before they are theoretically due (e.g. before a WP is being issued).

Once you've got your card the chosen hospital(s) ( usually two) is on your card as well. Then you're registered and they can't ask for cash from you.

I helped a colleague, who paid already in for five months, then drove to the office, just to find out that obviously the "lady" from the financial office of our school, had pocketed the first two months of her contributions. Maybe also the schools'.....

I'm still waiting that our director is registering "his: school at the social security office.

After 10 years working here, there's not too much that would surprise me anymore. Will be able to take my 67 K out next May, when I turn 55.

The insurance has already paid more for a motorcycle accident many moons ago, that I paid in. Such an insurance is really needed here. You never know....

Yes. I claimed back 13,000 baht from my girlfriends hospital costs for the birth of our son. You take the receipt to the dwp and they will reimburse you.

Thank you Puyai. Could you please tell me one more thing.. I am wondering if the reimbursement is specific to any hospital.. May be private or public ones or something. Or is it applicable to any hospital, just have to submit the receipt as you have said earlier.
