No not gay like today.

But still pretty funny!

From the preface:

In order to warn the stranger and gay city bucks against the possibility of being involuntary induced to visit a low pest house ...

Here at this link you can basically view a guide to the straight Philadelphia brothel scene way back then.

It's really a fun read!

Apart from the word "gay" (which has nothing to do with homosexuality in this case), what is the relevance to the gay forum?

The document gives some historical context to the word gay.

Many people think before the current primary meaning it just meant an asexual kind of happy.

It actually had sexual connotations.

Beyond that, if you really think it's a big issue and the topic doesn't belong here, you have some choices:

-- Ignore the topic

-- Report it to "The Man"

-- Continue to whinge about it

Thank you very much. I enjoyed reading the 'guide'. I can imagine the author enjoying himself in doing the research, or did he merely stand outside, and wait to scare off clients when questioning them leaving the establishments? rolleyes.gif Maybe he received free samples for good write-ups.

I choose to continue to whin(g)e about it.

"And we'll all feel gay when

Johnny comes marching home..."

That must have been one handsome dude to turn a whole village gay, methinks.
