Campaign to free gorilla from Bangkok highrise zoo
The Nation

BANGKOK: -- A campaign to take Bua Noi a female gorilla held in the Pata Zoo to a better home has gained fresh momentum as the chief of a key agency has now agreed to look into the case.

The Pata Zoo is on the top two floors of the Pata department store, an ageing building on a busy street in Bangkok. It houses more than 200 species of animals, reptiles, turtles, birds, monkeys, leopards, tigers, bears, and the lone gorilla, Bua Noi.

Animal lover Sinjira Apaitan started an online campaign to help Bua Noi through change.org nearly a year ago.

Now, she is preparing to sit down with the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP) chief Nipon Chotibal tomorrow for talks on how to improve the fate of Bua Noi.

"This is going to be another historical chapter in Thailand's zoo industry," Sinjira said via her web site.

Why only free the gorilla??

No wild animals should be kept in captivity for our entertainment!!

What about all the chicks behind glass in Bangkok then, awaiting you to point your finger at them??--facepalm.gif

If they are there of their own free will, then let them be.

I don't think the animals in the Pata Zoo are there of their own free will.

a gorilla on top of a high rise, it could only be Thailand,!!!!!

IMO the junta should close the zoo down immediately, prosecute the owners and look for suitable homes for all the animals

and while its in the closing mode the same should happen to Chang Mai zoo

shockingly horrible place

You paint a rosy picture of the sex industry where 56% are homeless and 30% are underage with no where to go. Many are forced indebted workers, virtual slaves to the bars they work in. Yes, many are also somewhat empowered by their choice of work, and these are often the Thais, but for many of the girls from Laos and Cambodia, tricked into thinking they are coming to work in hotels then beaten and raped into submission before a life of sexual slavery, there is little hope of leaving.

Many zoos in the world actually want to close down, it is finding a suitable new home for the animals that often proves hard and not financially viable. Perhaps you know someone who can afford to house and keep an insane gorilla?

The owners of this particular zoo should be held responsible for what they've done, prosecuted fined and made to cover all future costs..

PATA ZOO
Campaign to free gorilla from high-rise zoo in Bangkok

The Nation

BANGKOK: -- A CAMPAIGN to take Bua Noi - a female gorilla held in the Pata Zoo - to a better home has gained fresh momentum as the chief of a key agency has now agreed to look into the case.

Now, she is preparing to sit down with the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP) chief Nipon Chotibal tomorrow for talks on |how to improve Bua Noi's fate.

"This is going to be another |historic chapter in Thailand's zoo industry," Sinjira said via her website.

Sinjira, a Thai woman who lives in New Zealand, has been trying to raise public awareness, saying a gorilla like Bua Noi deserves a |home better than being locked up in a caged area on the top of a Bangkok department store.

Sinjira lamented that such a loving and intelligent creature had lived in such conditions for nearly three decades when it should have been allowed to enjoy a better home elsewhere.

"I need to speak up not just for Bua Noi but also for other rare wild animals facing a similar fate," she said.

Sinjira plans to ask the DNP to revoke the licence to operate the zoo at the Pata department store.

"The licence expired last year anyway," she claimed.

Sinjira's online campaign on change.org had attracted 34,824 supporters as of yesterday. She will submit the list of her supporters to Nipon when they met.

One of Sinjira's supporters, Wallaporn Bodhimu, said Bua Noi might not be able to live in the forest after its long years in captivity but hoped it would be allowed to live in an open zoo instead.

"Please let it go," she said.

in most countries the owners of the zoo would be facing fines and prison.

It will be interesting to hear if/how/when the director on NPs allows them to wiggle out of this.

while they're at it, why not do something about the tiger temple too?

Oh yes, and ask him what's happened about the ivory traders and stockpiles of illegal ivory????

.....and ask him what happened to eco-activist.....Pholachi "Billy" Rakchongcharoen ....

Horrible you say ? Have you seen some of the large enclosures ? A jaguar has a better living arrangement than I saw in the USA. Granted some cages are too small but they are improving.

This was on the evening news, and there was a good Camera shot of the Gorilla , it was so so sad to see,

Imagine being locked up for most of your life....

How sad is that, Animals should be left in there own habitat...

I hope somethingi happens and all the animals get set free....

I believe you could pay to set them free, but it seems after being with you, they end up going back anyhow.

Take away the demand, do not visit, then there would be no need for them to exist ( and no incentive)sad.png

Funny, i was writing a review about Chang mai zoo for trip advisor, and i looked through the reviews that were positive and seemed they were mainly

eastern European
