The Who unveil first new song in eight years

(BBC) Rock legends The Who have unveiled their first song in eight years as they mark their 50th anniversary.

Be Lucky includes lyrical references to Australian rockers AC/DC and French electro band Daft Punk and will be included in a double album featuring the group's greatest hits.

The band will donate royalties from the new track to teenage cancer sufferers.

One of the most influential rock bands of the 20th Century, their hits include My Generation and I Can See for Miles.

Earlier this year, surviving members Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend announced they would play a tour, which starts in the UK in November, to mark their 50 years in the industry.

Daltrey described the tour as "the beginning of the long goodbye".

A good group with some great music - I'm still hoping for a rekindling of Dire Straits - but MK doesn't want the big production/out of control/tour limelight <> the reason he toned it down.....

I wonder if The Who ever wish that they had died before they got old.

Have always ranked The Who as the number 3 all time greatest rock band after the Beatles #1 and The Stones #2.

They had something to say. Hooked since Apple Jack. Saw them at Anaheim Stadium circa 1978 three rows out from center stage. One of the best concerts ever.

I would put Led Zeppelin at #3, but The Who were a great band. Who's Next always sounds good to me.

Dont get me wrong, the Who were/are a good band, I do like a lot of their stuff, but I think they built their fame more on showmanship rather than musical ability and rode the "coat tails" of Beatles during the "British invasion" of the US.

Keith Moon is a personal rock and roll hero of mine, most likely the greatest rock drummer ever, but more because he was a "real character" and a certifiable nutcase and his monikor of "Moon the loon" was well earned

Yes Townsend is reputably "the inventor" of power chords and involved in the development and popularity of Marshall amps

but if we are saying the Who is #3 in the rankings of greatest rock bands, where would someone put The Kinks ?, formed around the same time as the Who, actually a year earlier (1963) and in IMHO contributed far more musically to rock then the Who, by laying a lot of the ground work to what became "punk" ie the "Ramones", heavy metal/hard rock ie Led Zep, Sabbath, and numerous other genre of music which came later

and if you listen to the Who, you will hear lots of the Kinks "influences" as well and i think I remember reading somewhere that Townsend even admitted, nicking some of Ray Davis's "riff's"

There was only "Moonie" who stood by that lyric...laugh.png

I used to have a good friend who felt the same way as you, and I've had the 'which band would you rank #3?' discussion enough to know that many others feel the same as well.

When you consider The Who's lyrics, though, I just feel they had something to say, a 'message', a raison d'etre, i.e., My Generation, Who Are You? Baba O'Reilly, Who's Next, even 'Behind Blue Eyes' They had an emotional intensity which always 'spoke' to me.

To me it seemed like Led Zeppelin just sang about getting drunk, getting high and getting laid, but maybe that's not fair. The only song of their's that I ever got into was 'Stairway to Heaven.'
