Brake failure toyota altis 2010? Looking for info after crash

Featured Replies

I have (or had) an Toyota Altis 2010, and had last week an accident.

I was driving on the Mahidol Road behind a 4x4 had an normal speed and distance, see the truck in front of me full braking, and feel that i wouldnt make it could say to my wife that i couldnt make it and hit the truck. Lots of damage :-(

I still cant believe that I couldnt stop, now after seeing my camera records, Then i cant see that my car was braking, if i look at therecorded information it looks that I drove with arround 60km an hour in THE back of THE truck.

I didnt feel THE car diving nor i feel ABS??

Still convinced that the distance was enough to stop.

Luckey iT was a truck so my car run under it what cost me the complete front of THE car included the 2 airbags.

We had no injuries , also the driver in front of us not what is The most important.

I have send a mail to toyota without any reactions

So what i would like to know if there are any known problems with brakes of the altis?

Also maybe someone could guide me where to start a complain here in Thailand?

THE car would be repaired, but to be honest I dont trust it any more.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi,

I cant motor forum, where can i find this Then i Will move iT over to that forum.

About the camera record, i dont mind to upload iT but is large in size

Hi, as far as my knowledge on the Toyota Altis there is no major known manufacturer problems reported in the Automotive Development Community. Your problem all together to me sound like a software glitch ( delay in software, creating an demand signal to ABS and various other electronic components within the vehicle when you hit the brakes ).

These kind of problems is common if the vehicle had previous water damage or had a bad battery and was " jump started " in the wrong way. This could cause corrupt software command prompts....

Did you had any ABS or EBD Warning lights flashing on your cluster ? Or maybe any major repairs done to the vehicle which require removing of any earth cables ?

Anti-lock brakes will seem like they aren't working. It's because they release prior to locking up. This is to prevent lose of control. In a panic it might seem like they weren't working, but my bet is they saved you from even more damage. You won't leave skid marks like in cars without antilock breaks.

Can't see the brake peddle so he already said his brakes failed, aren't you paying attention? I wouldn't comment anyway, too many smart acres like yourself and few sensible enough to want to learn or have appreciation for the effort to educate so not worth the effort trying to teach the unwilling, ignorant masses.

OP 4 year old car? Tough to say, it's in that owner maintenance time frame, comes down to who's doing the maintenance and how mechanically savvy the owner is to recognize potential problems before they become failures, really tough to say what indications of brake failure you may have been having prior to the final event if, as noted, they actually were failing? A bit difficult to understand your description.

Come on Ace, surely the OP wouldn't admit to hitting the the wrong pedal? Is that a clutch or brake?

normal speed and distance
feel that i wouldnt make it

Your normal distance is dangerously close.

Driver error, he does not even know if his car was breaking. He never states that he applied the breaks nor does he say what the result of applying the breaks was.

A driver should know if their vehicle is slowing down or not.

When ABS kicks in, it feels nothing like heavy braking in a pre-ABS vehicle. The wheels locked up, plenty of screeching from the tyres and lots of black marks on the road. With ABS there is no noise, the wheels don't lock up, and it can give the driver a feeling of not slowing down as compared to an old school full wheel lock up.

In reality of course, the computer is doing it's best to get you stopped in the shortest possible distance.

Sometimes a driver who isn't familiar with the feeling will also think that the perceived lack of slowing down coupled with minor pulsing of the brake pedal is in some way a failure - they will then momentarily release the pedal and then reapply, thus extending the braking distance.

OP - is that a possibility in your situation? You say you didn't feel the ABS, but what does that mean? If you didn't feel the pulsing, then you didn't have full pressure on the pedal

ABS also allows you to steer while braking. So it shouldn't be assumed that you just have to sail into the object in front of you if the braking distance is too short.

I'd recommend that if you drive an ABS vehicle and never experienced the feeling of ABS actually working, find a quiet piece of road and do an emergency stop at 100-120klm/h to see how it feels. Then when a real ,life situation occurs you may be better prepared.

Warpy... get a lifecoffee1.gif

Firstly glad no one suffered injuries in your collision.

As to saying you think the braking system was defective, and complaining to the manufacture, I would think your going to need an independent vehicle examiner to check the vehicle, very similar to what is done in the UK after a fatal/serious RTC ( I have personal experience in this after being vehicle 2 in such an RTC in 2007 ).

I would thought it would be costly, have you passed your concerns on to your insurance company? Maybe they are willing to help you in any action

Glad to hear there are no personal injuries.

All in all I get the impression the OP was involved in an accident for which he was to blame, and is no having troubles accepting that fact. Whereas he was probably driving too close to car in front and/or did react too late.

I'm sorry, but I really have problems believing a sudden brake failure.

Hi Thanks for all THE reactions.

Just to make clear i dont have any problem to have an accident what is my fault.

I drive in THE back of THE car so im wrong in THE first place.

I know how abs is feeling, and for sure if you make an Emergengy brake you Will feel THE ABS, i think i drive long enough to know how iT feels.

I could have been looking for an second to THE right or left what would make THE distance far shorter.

No problem with to be wrong, for that i have an insurance.

BUT... If you come in an Emergengy situation Then for sure you Will brake full, and there is my or our problem.

We didnt feel THE car braking strongly at all.

IT looks iT slows down a bit and run with speed under THE truck.

I know THE differentst beween brake and clutch pedel, even more easy in my car as iT is an automatic

I don't understand the remarks about ABS brake usage, in all vehicles I have owned the car/ truck with ABS have a shuddering effect when heavy braking is applied, the Versys I have now does unless on lose gravel, diesel spills, ice is not hard to find here but it is on the road surface. biggrin.png

OP this reminds me of a Toyota problem on one of the Lexus models, you are rightly concerned to find out about your cars braking performance, it may well have been a fault even if it is a rare anomaly.

The cars ECU may show a fault when checked in a computer analysis but I wouldn't let Toyota touch it yet.

Surely there must be someone independent of Toyota in Chiang Mai who can help.

"You won't leave skid marks like in cars without antilock breaks."

This isn't necessarily true, skid marks are frequently left by vehicles equipped with ABS, although they may not be as clear as those left by unequipped vehicles.

Does you car have an

Event data recorder?

Is he related to Mr Overfill, the other nit wit.cheesy.gif .ABS do leave trace marks via loose gravel sometimes.Useless Dam Things.O.K for unskilled drivers.
