Brit injured in fight on Walking Street, South Pattaya



PATTAYA: -- In the early hours of Monday, a 23 year old British National was taken to Hospital suffering from a laceration to his head, which was reportedly sustained during a scuffle with a group of Thai men he was drinking with on Walking Street.

Mr. Scott Anderson was taken to the Pattaya Memorial Hospital and was initially immobilized as a precaution by rescue workers, who picked him up from Walking Street where he had spent the night drinking with a group of Thai men.

When it came to paying the drinks bill, the general feeling was that Mr. Anderson should pay for everything. Verbal arguments soon became physical and Mr. Anderson was knocked to the ground and sustained a head wound.

I recall being told that certain people from a certain place have a habit of doing that. Happy to sit and drink as long as someone else was buying the rounds, but when it came their turn they would suddenly disappear (at least until someone else signaled for another round at which point they would miraculously reappear).

I go out drinking with my Thai friends all the time. I sometimes have a hard time trying to pay the bin as one of them has already scooped it. We've come up with a bit of system - each bar/club we go into, someone different pays the bill. If we sit in one place a long time and guys are buying drinks for friends/ladies, then everyone chips in. Never had, or seen, an argument over who was supposed to pay the bill but maybe that's because none of the people I hang out with try and take advantage of each other.

Have had the same experience as you with Thai friends (well, the guys all seem intent on grabbing the bill, but if I'm with a group of ladies, no hands go for the bill but my own... but that's international). Anyway, I suspect that the Thai guys that hang about on Walking Street cut from a different cloth....

I'm sure there are lots of people from lots of places who are tight <deleted>..... Don't tar everyone from certain places with the same brush....

I believe that the Thai guys were ripping him off...... simple as that.....

I think I would like to follow you around for a night and see this place where, "Thai Friends" pick up the drink tab. In all my years living in BKK, Pataya, Phuket I have never seen this happen and never, never ever have I had the luxury of a "Thai Friend."

Gets here and gets fleeced by a bunch of Thais who then beat the crap out of him to add insult to injury and will then go back home and possibly report to his local press of how truly violent and dangerous Thailand really is for tourists as he has found out first hand.

Repeat this a few times.

Slowly the message will get across.

Thailand has two types of people.

Thais who want to pay for.everything so they can be seen to be a big shot and thais that expect you to pay for everything.

Unfortunately tourists usually end up encountering the second type.

I had a similar experience and given it was for about $50 I gave them the benefit of the doubt and put it down to a newbie mistake.

Now I never drink with that type of Thai unless I let them know upfront 'oh I only have small money in my wallet today'.

They get the hint....

Same here, they are usually pretend friends, ie so long as they are getting something they want. Only once had a Thai pay for drinks and that was one bin in a night of 6 bins and he was the son of my girlfriend who I was meeting for the first time. I was impressed as he doesn't have much money

This one of the oldest and ugliest Thai scams. Thai men sitting drinking outside see a gullible looking solo male traveller and invite him to join them for a drink. Gullible foreigner thinking it would be rude to reject their invitation has a drink with them. If he is lucky, he just gets stung for the bill for their entire afternoon and svening drinking session. If he is unlucky, he gets lured off to a remote place to be robbed and murdered. Quality Thai hospitality at its best.

In places like Mongolia locals invite you to their homes for a glass of fermented mare's milk which tastes disgusting but you must accept because this is sincere hospitality. In Thailand, land of mercenary smiles this does not exist. Old hands quickly learn to ignore all solicitations from strangers.

Lets take a look where this man hails from. During a Friday night in the UK a young person can hope to encounter many scenario's. The main scenario being a drunken scuffle. The UK can be a warzone on the weekend.

I imagine whilst drunk he forgot he was in Thailand. He has proceeded with drunken insults at the displeasure of the situation, only inflaming it beyond all proportion. The Thai will have then set about making an example of him. I have noticed the Thai do not do rude well, and struggle to grasp the concept of sarcasm.

People always end up fighting where alcohol is concerned and the British people know this. They won't tar the situation with the same credit as the recent murders in Koh Tao. They will liken it to a typical night out in the UK or on the Costa Del Sol.
