Travel insurance accepted by Germany

Featured Replies

I'm told by my Girlfriend that Germany only accepts an approved list of travel/health insurance for non EU visitors applying for Schengen Visa, is this true and if so how do I find out who's on the list ?

What we need is an insurance for at least UK & Germany but preferably all EU for 6 months.

Whilst this list is from the Italian Visa Application Centre, it's common to all Consulates.

Your girlfriend can also use a company from the EU, when my partner applied for her visa last year she used Columbus Direct in the UK, the price was about the same with much better cover, we purchased it online.

Indeed ToG. Any EU insurance company with a Schengen travel insurance policy will do, as well as the larger Thai ones. Officially any insurance company that offers a good policy with sufficient coverage etc. will do but I wouldn't trust small, almost unknown, insurance companies as in practise they may not meet all the requirements: risk of not being being covered when something does happen would seem too high for me and also the embassy.

I don't know if the Germans have a list of approved (or banned) Thai insurance companies. I'd first check out an EU insurance company anyway.

Edit: website of the German embassy (link can be found in the Schengen sticky), sadly only in Thai and German:

The following is regarding travel insurance companies (Reiseversicherungsdienste), the PDFs are partially in English

The last PDF covers Thai insurance companies which are accepted, all other's are not. Any EU company should do fine:

Please note that a medical insurance is compulsory. You can provide either a policy from an insurance
company based in Europe or one of the Thailand based companies listed below.
Only the listed insurance companies are accepted by the Embassies of the Schengen Countries in
Bangkok. If you provide insurance from a different company based in Thailand, the policy will
not be accepted.
The sum insured has to exceed 1.5 million Bath or 30.000 Euro. The choice of a
particular health insurance is up to the Visa applicant.
Legal disclaimer:
The list is subject to change and the embassy assumes no responsibility for its
correctness.
Remark:
Please notify relevant Embassies if you experience the following situations:
1. Your insurance company refuses to pay for medical expenses incurred in the Schengen area.
2. Your insurance company refuses to give full refundin case of visa refusal upon presentation of
official proof of rejection from the Embassy.
Attention!
Motorbike taxis nearby the Embassy may often bring the clients to another but the desired agency
which charge exorbitant rates! Please do not buy an insurance or other services in front of the
Embassy but contact one of the above mentioned companies.

Note that insurance is NOT compulsory for family members (spouse etc.) of EU citizens who applied under directive 2004/38/EC. If it's wise to travel un(der)insured is an other matter though.

What about http://www.covomo.com ? I've heard that covomo provides travel health insurance in Germany. I'm not acquainted with it but you can see once if it can solve your problem.
