Nato jets 'intercept Russian spy plane' over Baltic

(BBC) A Russian spy plane has been intercepted by Nato jets over the Baltic Sea, the alliance says, amid heightened tensions in the region.

Estonia summoned Russia's ambassador on Wednesday after its military said the Ilyushin-20 plane had entered its airspace for about a minute.

But Russia said the plane had been on a training flight and had not violated Estonian airspace.

Russia has been accused of several recent border violations in the region.

The conflict in eastern Ukraine, which the West says Russia has stoked by supporting the rebels, has prompted sanctions against senior figures in Moscow and bans on EU goods in response.

In the past week, non-Nato member Sweden has been searching for a submarine reportedly sighted in its waters in the southern Stockholm archipelago some 48km (30 miles) from the capital. The suspected submarine is widely assumed to be Russian.

Russian imperialism and provocations are back. Actually, it has started few years ago and since that time there are more and more incidents. Jets, submarines, soldiers ...

For Russia, the safe borders are borders where Russian army is on both sides.

Soviets are back, sadly.

This Russian incident was a real threat. NOT. That plane was developed in 1956 and is a slow propeller driven plane without much altitude or speed capability.

Russia is really struggling due a big drop in oil prices and simply doesn't have any money to spend on military. Its equipment and technology is crap.

All Putin can do or say to sound tough is to remind people that he has nukes. That whole bunch is comprised of Neanderthals.

Why are conventional weapons important any more? You talk about Neanderthals. Let's see what America would look like if Russia sets off an EMP using its nuclear arsenal ph34r.png

Well, it's not as if NATO has provoked Russia... Not in the slightest... How about the US / NATO non-aggression treaty that guaranteed Gorbachov that NATO would not expand into the east... Lies and a broken treaty... Then what about the FACT that the EU / US backed the neo-nazi overthrow of Ukraine... And what about the sanctions imposed on Russia by the west, the Saudis ramping up pumping to lower the cost of oil to hurt Russian exports, and on and on and on...

Putin has warned just last week that these actions might work when you are dealing with a 3rd world shithole that has no way to fight back, but Vlad reminded everyone that Russia is a nuclear power and not to be provoked...

For those bleating that the "Soviet era is back", get a grip... Russia was happily minding their own business when the US funded the neo-nazi overthrow of Ukraine in retaliation for their intervention into the Syrian mess in the summer of 2013...

You people really do need to read me before you comment on things you know nothing about...

I hear that TVF is giving away free tinfoil hats today.

It's hard to believe that someone would actually prefer and support Russia over the West. That is unless he's a Russian elite.

" It's hard to believe that someone would actually prefer and support Russia over the West "rolleyes.gif

And even a former US Presidential candidate says the same

The former Republican congressman and three-time presidential candidate Ron Paul has launched a scathing attack on what he calls a US-backed coup in Ukraine, insisting the Crimean people have the right to align their territory with Moscow and characterising sanctions against Russia as “an act of war”.

You're kidding, right? How many wars and skirmishes go on using conventional weapons? The answer is all of them since the US nuked Japan.

If Russia launched a nuke it would result in mutual assured destruction (MAD.) It would be suicide.

We are going to continue to see conventional spying with satellites, subs, planes, etc. and conventional battles and Russia doesn't have what it takes to keep up. LINK

" and Russia doesn't have what it takes to keep up "

A mutual MEP attack would not result in total destruction as on the ground.

Who knows what Russia will end up doing if they keep being provoked

USA has the biggest armed forces, over 800 military bases around the world, but 18 trillion dollars of debt.

I think I will sit on a beach with a cold drink, and watch.

Do you want to discuss Russia's agreement with Ukraine, UK, and the US to RESPECT Ukrainian sovergneity and not to politicize Russia's export of natural gas to Ukraine? NATO had no interest in Ukraine becoming a member and never explored such as idea. The UE did see Ukraine as a potential member and the former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych campaigned his election on Ukraine joining the EU. Then Putin gave Yanukovych an $$$$ offer he couldn't refuse to not join the EU. Now by Putin's invasion of Ukraine both in the Croimea and Eastern Ukraine, he has forced Ukraine to fly into the arms of the EU and forced NATO to take miitary defensive action. You need to look again at your action-hero Putin.

It's not like Russia is such a small country they run out of space to fly a plane on a training mission.

It's not like 1 min is a spy mission, but hey let's make something out of nothing

I think you.underestimate Russia's military capabilities. They have invested a lot into the army now for many years and have clearly superior capabilities to many other countries in Europe maybe with exception of Great Britain and France. Also NATO's capabilities in Europe have diminished and they are now trying to reinvest and rebuild their European capabilities.

Excuse me but who is provoking who? Do you truly believe that Russia annexing Crimea, supplying troops and equipment to the rebels in Eastern Ukraine, constantly violating other countries' airspace, claiming the North Pole Russian territory, South Ossetian war, etc. is not provoking anybody?

Russia's appetite for territory is huge - they need their Lebensraum.

Tell me what to read then - Stalins memoirs?

Absolutely agree with you. The west has been busily stoking the fires against Russia, which has acted with the greatest restraint. The Main Stream Media has of course followed its assigned role and poured more fuel on the fire. The nearby sea of Azov is a very desirable resource as the gas and oil fields situated in the region will tell you what is really going on in the soap opera called the Ukrainian Conflict.

It seems that west is doing most of the damage in the world. So what ever west does gotta be right just because Russians are "evil"?

The basis of the above argument that NATO wants to take over the former Soviet union, kind of falls down a bit when you think how long it is since the Berlin wall was pulled down by its own heroic citizens. NATO could have walked in through all the former Soviet states if it had the desire to.

They are all facts in Loptr post. "prefer and support" I don't understand how you came to that conclusion.

Right and wrong is not spelled west and east.
