Hi,

What's the best free program for unzipping files on windows 7.

I download some files that are compressed and just want a simple free program to un-zip them.

Thanks

Windows 7 comes with the ability to compress and decompress .zip files.

I usually install RARLab's WinRAR that can compress/decompress many other formats. The installer will install context-aware option in File Explorer that you can see when right-clicking files.

Many sites list WinRAR as shareware, but RARLabs usually tags it as,

"WinRAR is a trial product, meaning you have the chance to thoroughly test it. The program can be used absolutely free of charge for 40 days!"

"While archiving with the RAR format is proprietary, Rarlabs supply as copyrighted freeware the source code of the UnRAR unpacker, with a license allowing it to be used in any software, thus enabling others to produce software capable of unpacking, but not creating, RAR archives."

"Pack (create) or validate (test) RAR and ZIP archives."

"Unpack ACE, ARJ, BZ2, CAB, EXE, GZ, ISO, JAR, LZH, RAR, TAR, UUE, XZ, Z, ZIP, ZIPX, and 7z archives."

WinZip

"Shareware (30-day free evaluation)"

"Creation of, addition to, and extraction from ZIP archives"

"Decompression of following archive formats: .bz2, .rar, LHA/LZH (native in 11.2), 7z (12.0)"

7ZIP

"GNU LGPLv2.1+ with unRAR restriction (RARLab license prevents .rar file creation)" [so... FREEware]

"7-Zip supports 7z, ZIP, Gzip, bzip2, xz, tar and WIM"

The utility also supports unpacking APM, ARJ, CHM, cpio, DEB, FLV, JAR, LHA/LZH, LZMA, MSLZ, Office Open XML, onepkg, RAR, RPM, smzip, SWF, XAR and Z archives and CramFS, DMG, FAT, HFS, ISO, MBR, NTFS, SquashFS, UDF and VHD disk images."

That's great RichCor,

I've just got WinRar.

Do they leave you it for free indefinitely.

Yes, it is free indefinitely, just a nag screen occasionally. Never could understand WinRar's business model
