Can anyone tell me how I access all my old GMail messages please?

go to gmail home page left hand side various options ie sent/bin/map trash and all mail i think after 1 month

It seems that a lot of emails that I assumed were in my Inbox may have been archived, but I'm not sure how to retrieve them from archive.

As already mentioned, if you are using a Web Browser to view gmail look under the 'tag' in the left column named 'All Mail'.
