We have a premature baby (born 35 weeks) 2 weeks old now. The wife has experienced issues with expressing milk.

After the first week farang noi lost 20% of birth weight. Other issues: low glucose blood result (fluctuating) and high jaundace reading (12 then up to 13).

We tried a brand of formula given by the dr but baby does frequent poo's shortly after consumption. After a week of feeding her alternatively- first breast milk and then formula every 2 to 3 hours her weight has risen above birth weight and glucose is normal. Jaundice has reduced to 8. Hoping that his goes to 0 next week.

Is it ok to do alternate feeding of breast milk and formula? Should we continue with this method in light of the improved results or should we go back solely to breast milk?

What is the best brand of formula milk?

thanks for any tips

It should be no problem. We did the same in the beginning until my wife was not given anymore milk. Our hospital recommend NAN HA 1 for feeding milk and until today it works very well. Be aware that there are two different ones available in the market NAN HA 1 and NAN HA 1 pro. We use only the HA 1. Our little one is keeping it in and he seems to like it.

Hope your little one is getting better and stronger daily.

Im no doctor but frequent poos after formula milk maybe means lactose intolerant which apparently is common in Asian babies.

Our daughter is lactose intolerant and it was diagnosed by a pharmacist not a doctor so we started using s26 gold lactose free formula, not sure if it's in Thailand, but lactose free formula is. Never a problem since. It can't hurt to try lactose free, see if it changes the poos.

I know when it comes to mums making milk it takes a little while to get going and its a real supply and demand thing. If she stops, so does the supply. Wifes diet also plays a part. Ive heard eating chicken increases milk supply from one girl I know, but everyones different right.

There's a top guy on here his name is ToddWeston, a Canadian pharmacist who lives in Bkk who is excellent for friendly advice. Drop him a pm with your questions mate.

Slow milk production is a known issue with premature births. One of the most important features of the milk is the protection it gives to the baby, and this protection is invaluable even in small amounts. My recommendation is to stay with the breast milk regardless of amount and use formula as a supplement only if absolutely necessary. The mothers milk-production WILL reduce if you start replacing breast feeds with formula. To be on the safe side, I would go for a lactose-free alternative until lactose intolerance suspicions have been dismissed.

Difficult one, this.

first feed breast, then top off with formula. always do the breast first even if there isnt much milk, most women will increase milk production with this method although some just arent able too do so. if she is expressing milk, it is very very important that she is either doing it by hand properly, or using a milk expressing thingy (sorry forgot what its called in english) that is fitting her properly and working properly, AND that she has what is called 'let down' , meaning she is relaxed, in a quiet place, maybe near the baby or thinking about the baby, and more milk will flow mom must drink .plenty of fluids, mostly water, before nursing or expressing milk, and then drink more fluids between, as hydration affects milk production much more drastically then the food a woman eats in any given day (same with all mammals btw).

if she is nervous or worried about milk amounts, she will have less milk let down. thsi is the same for goats, horses, cows and human moms of newborns. the more she worries about amount, the less she will have due to tension. also the baby if she is nursing might be a weak nurser if a preemie. important to see if she is latching on correctly, if she is actively nursing and swallowing milk, and/or if she is just going thru the motions of nursing but not really pulling out milk... a common enough problem even in full term infants. sometimes a different position is needed to help her hold face to breast and use tongue properly for the nursing/swallowing. again, these are things that a nursing counsellor can show and tell on site. im sure there are places that have breastfeeding support etc in thai

i havent a clue as to forumulas for preemies etc, but make sure the mom isnt drinking cola and caffeine filled drinks as these will reduce amount of milk, in israel we give mothers malt non alcholic beer for milk production but have never seen it else where.

no la leche league or preemie mothers' forums in lifestyle sections of thai internet sites or magazines?
