EGAT pushes for construction of 19 new power plants

BANGKOK, 31 October 2014 (NNT) -The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) has set plans to increase the electricity generating capacity for national energy security by establishing seven more coal power plants and 12 more alternative energy power plants by the year 2022.

Deputy governor of the EGAT Rattanachai Namwong said the nation’s electricity demand had been continuously increasing. Thailand now needed 52,000 megawatts and it was likely that the country would need 70,000 megawatts by 2030. The EGAT therefore had to plan an increase in its power production capacity by building more power plants, said Ms. Rattanachai.

From 2019-2022, the EGAT will construct seven more coal power plants with the combined capacity of over 6,000 megawatts in Krabi and Songkhla provinces. By 2020, 12 alternative energy power plants with the combined capacity of 14,000 megawatts will be set up. All of the new power plants will use technology and guidelines for community engagement from Germany so that they will be accepted by surrounding communities.

BoT: Q3 growth lower than expected

BANGKOK, 31 October 2014 (NNT) - The Bank of Thailand (BoT) has reported that the Thai economic growth in the third quarter 2014 was lower than expected but the tourism sector started showing signs of gradual recovery after Asian tourists returned to visit Thailand.

Executive of the BoT Rung Malikamas on Friday announced the economic situation in September and the third quarter, saying the economy grew slower than the central bank previously forecast with a modest growth of 0.5% in the private sector’s consumption. The factors which affected such growth included high household debt, low-priced agricultural products and the government’s spending which had also been lower than expected, said Ms. Rung.

The third quarter’s investment was still negative at -1.7%, lower than -0.1% in the previous quarter in part due to low demand for products. However, the government’s budget disbursement for investment in the third quarter was better than the second quarter with the recovery of the tourism sector.

The central bank could not say for now whether the third quarter’s economic growth would make the economy of the whole year expand less than 1.5%, said the BoT executive. She added that the Monetary Policy Committee would consider the matter on 5 November.

Industries face production drop

BANGKOK, 1 December 2014 (NNT) – The Office of Industrial Economics has reported a drop in the Industrial Production Index (IPI) mainly due to the slowdown of electronics and automobile industries.

According to the Office of Industrial Economics, the Industrial Production Index in September dropped by 3.9 percent from the same period last year, while production capacity rose to 61.1 percent from 60.38 percent year-on-year.

The drop in automobile, hard disk drive, petroleum, jewelry and tobacco production is to blame for the Industrial Production Index fall. Vehicles production in September dropped by 27.46 percent and automobile export to markets in Oceania, the Middle East, Central America, and South America fell by 17.49 percent.

The production of electronic appliances shrank by 3.49 percent and that of electronic devices decreased by 4.54 percent. The manufacturing of hard disk drives also dropped by 9 percent, due to the sluggish markets in the US, Japan and the European Union. Food production meanwhile decreased by 17 percent.

However, the production of electrical appliances, particularly electric fans, air conditioners, and electric kettles enjoyed a rise of 1.59 percent. Textile and garment industries also saw a jump in production thanks to increasing demand from foreign markets. The steel industry also rose by 11.71 percent.
