YANGON, 3 November 2014: A Japanese-Singaporean joint venture has won the contract to build the USD1.5 billion Hanthawaddy International Airport located north of Yangon.

The Irrawaddy news channel reported that the bid winner — a consortium comprised of Singaporean firms Yongnam Holdings Ltd. and Changi Airport Planners and Engineers (CAPE), as well as Japan’s JGC Corporation — was announced at a press conference held at the Aerospace Engineering University in Yangon last week.

The contract for the airport was put out to tender in February 2013 for the first time, but was re-opened for tender a year later after the government was unhappy with the terms proposed by the initial tender winner.

About time too. The existing Yangon Airport is a small domestic sized entity by comparison to others in the region, with all the resultant hold ups on arrival.

This might ease the congestion at swampy. Better hub for incoming from Europe.

Good to see worthwhile developments to the infrastructure

An outstanding development that will attract ancilliary land development, improve infrastructure, create sustainable jobs, etc. But the $1.5 billion USD price tag does seem to be low for the project and a standard 30% contingency would quickly get project costs to $2 billion. If Myanmar doesn't carefully monitor project costs, quality control and assurance, and timetable, the project could easily become an unBuddha-like white elephant.
