Is it International driving permit required for G8 countries?

I got this pdf to decode...

thats what i was told by some friend

Is he correct?

I think we need IDP

" international license is NOT required for those who have a valid G8 license... The licence needs to have been issued by a country that has a treaty with the Thai government allowing the mutual acceptance of driving licences. Most countries, including Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the UK and the USA have this agreement with Thailand under the 1949 Geneva Convention on Road Traffic or the 1968 Vienna Convention on Road Traffic. Feel free to read it: 1968 Vienna Convention on Road Traffic.

Nothing to do with G8.

Required: valid home license in English with photo and treaty with Thailand (nearly all countries have the latter via the IDP treaties). If so, no IDP required.

Depends. Do you live here? Because if so, Thai DL is required, not home license with or without IDP.

Farang cop in Pattaya is a scam.

UK card licence with photo is valid for 90 days when entering Thailand.

If you are staying here living here you need to get a Thai licence as already stated.

When there is disagreement with, let's say an uninformed cop or a cop on the make it's really ( up to you ) whether you want to make waves at a police station, many will pay the on road fine and just be glad to be on their way.

The insurance will NOT cover anybody, without IDP or Thai drive license. Not even on rental cars. Those are new rules of the insurance companies? Since 2 month now.

Where did you get that information from? Thai law does not require IDP, so this would be very, very strange.

3. Or they thai citizens ? ......Farangie who become Thai citizen, I am lend to believe cannot be Thai Policemen.

4. They dont carry guns !! .......Farangie in most all cases can't have a gun in Thailand.

I am from usa and dont have IDP. I plan on driving a scooter through thailand. If an IDP is not required, what should I do if stopped and police want to ticket me?

How much are you fined and do you need to pay on the spot?

What if I refuse to pay?

How often will I be stopped driving cross country?

1. When you are stopped by the police, be polite and pay the fine.

2. How much you have to pay, depends on how good you can talk.

3. Yes, pay on the spot, else spend a lot off time at a police station.

4. If you refuse to pay, just have a good time at a police station.

It's the same in the USA, no driving license, don't drive, if you don't want to pay the fine.

BTW, if you don't have a license, than you don't have insurance.

I hope you have some money in your pockets.

Nope, in the USA it is very simple to get a motorcycle license and once you get it you can drive any size engine. Actually limiting the cc is very foreign to any American, although it makes sense.

I always thought it was funny when I was driving a motorcycle in Europe that I could go over there and drive the biggest bike at only 18 years of age because nobody in Europe could do that.

That means you can legally drive the bike on your US DL.

But are you Insured? Thats the bit you need to sort in case of accident!

Insured by who? Could be via home medical insurance or travel insurance, where often a requirement is that the driver has to be in possession of a valid DL. But a rental bike will 99% sure not have any insurance, except for the very limited compulsory cover.
