Interesting story in an Australian on-line Newspaper, The New Daily, with some really disturbing numbers of tourist deaths for various Nations, not just Australia.

IT’S hard to believe, but more Australians die in Thailand than in any other foreign country.

Lured in by cheap airfares and bargain beach holidays, it is one of the top four destinations for Aussies when travelling overseas. In 2013, 948,000 Aussies visited Thailand and it is estimated that 150 die each year — that’s nearly one every three days.

When things do go wrong, the Australian Embassy in Bangkok is usually Aussies’ first port of call. Helping about 5000 Aussies every year, it has the biggest consular team of all embassies around the world.

DFAT states 122 Australians died in Thailand in 2013, not 'killed'. Numbers would include accidents, murder, drug overdose, natural causes etc I assume the majority of deaths would be by natural causes.

Yeah, but improving the rep with REAL fundamental changes (not fluff and tricks) is something that can't be done overnight. The bad rep took decades to get where it's at now and turning it around even if the big improvements were made wouldn't be instant either. Consider Nicaragua ... many people still think it's a war zone or Colombia. most people probably still think it's run by a cocaine empire. I'm skeptical that the powers that be have that long term vision to really tackle this but sure hope that they do!

If they tighten up the rules, the types of tourists that make up these stats will quit coming. The present situation encourages them to come and their deaths dont scare off tourists that behave themselves.

I consider this an egg and chicken issue.

They had 15mn tourists, coming to some nice islands, with some horrible bits and some onshore resorts that were OK, and then pattaya.

They could handle it OK, most of the resorts were okish, the sea was blue some 5 star places and some nice golf.

Now they want 25mn and they have changed nothing. Infrastructure, police, facilities can't handle it, and its waaaay out of control. Some of my longstying friends who are still there are sick of it now.

The very thing that made it a nice place to be. Quiet, unusual, safe, carefree has been replaced with commercial, packed, tense, money grabbing.

They need to clean up and starr again or it won't ever get better.

I first went to the place I lived in the mid 90s. One Farang bar with maybe 10 regulars. Before I left 10, fights between farangs and locals were regular events. Its just all too much booze. Too much women. Too much , too much.

The system can't handle it.

Plenty of other places have more retired Brits.

There are plenty of working Brits in Bangkok too. The bangkok embassy is far too busy. But then, they rent 1000xc bikes to idiots without licenses and insurance, you can drinkn till sun up, you can rent a jet ski despite it instantly breaking thai law.

Build a lawless tourism industry and it will get out of hand eventually. Is there a single aspect of a tourist experience in Thailand that passes Thai law?

Check into the hotel. After that...rent a bike, no license, hookers, illegal, drink till sun up, 2am? Jet ski, illegal....

And on it goes.

That’s one in every 6,302 visitors.

If life expectancy in Aus is 80 years, you’d expect 1 in every 80 to die in a given year. (not exactly correct, but work with me here)

Even if the average tourist spends just a week in Thailand, there’s a 1 in 4160 chance they’d have died if they'd just stayed in in Aus. (80 x 52 = 4160)

Seems like the numbers say it’s a lot safer to travel to Thailand than stay home…

Of course that’s not true.

But this article gave just enough information to draw readers, and perhaps give some of the readers a smug feeling that they were right all along, but not nearly enough information to draw any valid conclusions…

Since the OP article is about Australians, how many Australians living in LOS and other countries have avoided premature or violent or mysterious death and are still alive? In the face of such sensationalist headlines and 'startling' statistics, just how do they manage to do this?

It's a lot easier and a helluva lot more relevant to get such data from the overwhelming number of 'survivors' than it is to draw conclusions from tabloid headlines, anecdotal tales, gossip, stereotyping and second-guessing the lifestyles of a few dead people.

As for making Thailand 'tighten up the rules'... how are things this morning in your particular nanny state?

As for defining the problem, I would say the root cause is corruption at all levels, poor education standards, bigotry towards the none city dwellers and policys to keep them down, failure to recognise and accept the problems and a general apathy to do anything about them.

Thailand has such huge potential; the constant two steps forward and one back over the years has truely retarded the overall wealth and well being of the nation. I fear what will become of the Kingdom once the inevetable comes to pass. Once the glue which tenuously holds the nation together dissolves true civil war becomes a very real possibility.

The nanny state of Singapore in which I currently reside is just fine this morning, big rain last night has knocked down the Sumatara haze. Crime and unemployment at extremely low levels, completely safe to be anywhere on the island at any time. Fantastic education opportunities for my child. I'll be on a magnificent golf course this afternoon, I can be on one of several great courses in Malaysia or Indonesia within a couple hours if I want to. Short plane ride to world class beach resort holidays in several differant countries available. Great variety of food and entertainment options. True it's bloody expensive and it can get boring but with the rest of asia at your doorstep the cure for Island fever is only a short drive, ferry or plane ride away.
