Ayjaydee according to the article 400 Brits die every year in Thailand compared to 50 Aussies so your statement is wrong.

That being said if the figures are true it's alarming for all countries and I'd like to see some official figures of foreign deaths excluding natural causes.

122 Australians killed here in one year would certainly get the media's attention as that seems like a lot. I wonder what the second most dangerous vacation destination is?

Guys have a look here:

Why Aussies are getting in trouble overseas

IT’S hard to believe, but more Australians die in Thailand than in any other foreign country.

Lured in by cheap airfares and bargain beach holidays, it is one of the top four destinations for Aussies when travelling overseas. In 2013, 948,000 Aussies visited Thailand and it is estimated that 150 die each year — that’s nearly one every three days.

When things do go wrong, the Australian Embassy in Bangkok is usually Aussies’ first port of call. Helping about 5000 Aussies every year, it has the biggest consular team of all embassies around the world.

perhaps because thailand allows young aussies to misbehave more than other countries do. no surprise they get in trouble.

Then maybe thailand should enforce some of its own rules as a basic minimum to save all....

why the hell should they be required to protect these kids from themselves. they wouldnt behave this way at home and if they behave like this in thailand and suffer for it, they have no one to blame but themselves.

DFAT states 122 Australians died in Thailand in 2013, not 'killed'. Numbers would include accidents, murder, drug overdose, natural causes etc I assume the majority of deaths would be by natural causes.

It seems, that Thailand can't buy a positive headline at the moment.

But the stats don't lie and these are serious issues.

It is time for Thailand to step up and grow up and start to get serious. Or it will continue to get these headlines. The world is a very small place these days.

The media has its teeth in thailand. Only real change will get it to let go.

Yeah, but improving the rep with REAL fundamental changes (not fluff and tricks) is something that can't be done overnight. The bad rep took decades to get where it's at now and turning it around even if the big improvements were made wouldn't be instant either. Consider Nicaragua ... many people still think it's a war zone or Colombia. most people probably still think it's run by a cocaine empire. I'm skeptical that the powers that be have that long term vision to really tackle this but sure hope that they do!

If they tighten up the rules, the types of tourists that make up these stats will quit coming. The present situation encourages them to come and their deaths dont scare off tourists that behave themselves.

there are deaths, of course there are - simple when there are estimated 50,000 UK retirees here

hard to believe, old people die too!

This from UK's FCO, August 2011

In total, 5,972 Britons died abroad last year, with those in the Philippines most likely to die, although 84% of the deaths were through natural causes. Thailand recorded the deaths of 374 Britons, 64% of which were from natural causes.

and from last year, Australia 2012 figures

"There have not been any unusual trends in the figures for deaths of Australians overseas in 2012," a DFAT spokesperson said. "More Australians are travelling and living abroad than ever before, and these figures reflect that increase."

2012 Australian overseas deaths - top 10

Rank - Country - Total deaths
1 Thailand 111
2 Philippines 68
3 Greece 60
4 Vietnam 54
5 US 51

I consider this an egg and chicken issue.

They had 15mn tourists, coming to some nice islands, with some horrible bits and some onshore resorts that were OK, and then pattaya.

They could handle it OK, most of the resorts were okish, the sea was blue some 5 star places and some nice golf.

Now they want 25mn and they have changed nothing. Infrastructure, police, facilities can't handle it, and its waaaay out of control. Some of my longstying friends who are still there are sick of it now.

The very thing that made it a nice place to be. Quiet, unusual, safe, carefree has been replaced with commercial, packed, tense, money grabbing.

They need to clean up and starr again or it won't ever get better.

I first went to the place I lived in the mid 90s. One Farang bar with maybe 10 regulars. Before I left 10, fights between farangs and locals were regular events. Its just all too much booze. Too much women. Too much , too much.

The system can't handle it.

those figures dont mean much without the total visits or total time spent in each country

948,000 visited and 150 died. (From Post #6)

That’s one in every 6,302 visitors.

If life expectancy in Aus is 80 years, you’d expect 1 in every 80 to die in a given year. (not exactly correct, but work with me here)

Even if the average tourist spends just a week in Thailand, there’s a 1 in 4160 chance they’d have died if they'd just stayed in in Aus. (80 x 52 = 4160)

Seems like the numbers say it’s a lot safer to travel to Thailand than stay home…

Of course that’s not true.

But this article gave just enough information to draw readers, and perhaps give some of the readers a smug feeling that they were right all along, but not nearly enough information to draw any valid conclusions…

so in 2012,

Thailand:150 deaths out of 948,000 visits equals 1 death for every 6320 visits

Philipines: 68 deaths out of 191,150 visits equals 1 death for every 2811 visits

Vietnam: 54 deaths out of 290,000 visits equals 1 death for every 5370 visits

A Brit in Thailand is 16x more likely to die, than a Brit in a western country.

Similar stats. for Australians.

Thailand has a huge risk of death for foreigners, when compared to western countries.

thats why many people dont visit countries like thailand, vietnam and phillipines. and many of the ones that do behave in ways that they would never be allowed to do in western countries with expected results
