I have my new car with its red plates. The white plates should be available in 2-3 weeks. Presumably I have to wait until then to get the tax disc that is displayed on the windscreen? Where do I go to do this, or will it be given to me at the dealership (Nissan) when I pick up the white plates?

These rules about not driving at night or out of my province (Bangkok) are a nonsense, right?

Yes, the dealer has to register, when that is done you get white plates, blue book and tax sticker.

These 'red plates rules' are the rules but hardly ever enforced. But they can be enforced if the police officer wants to.

I have a question for you brewster. How long did it take from the day you walked in the dealer to the day they handed you the keys to your new car? I'm buying a new vehicle very soon but I am on a tight schedule.

The dealership where you bought the car should have asked you for a payment in addition

to the vehicle cost, to cover for the registration (white plates) and the 1 year road tax.

When i bought my car they charged me 3500bt to cover this.

The rule about driving on red plates outside your province is true and enforced by the police

by paying a fine.

I ordered it from the dealer (Nissan) on Tuesday and collected it yesterday (Friday). I paid the whole amount by cashier's cheque.

Thanks. Yes I paid around 3,500 for this.

I have to drive to Pattaya on Wednesday, so how much should I expect to pay as a fine if I'm stopped by the police? Presumably once I've paid the fine, I won't have to pay again if stopped again!

Is there a reason for this rule?

Archaic rule and very, very likely you won't be stopped.

I was never stopped anyway, so sorry, can't tell you the amount of the fine, but would presume 500 baht or so.

I wondered why I'd been given a scruffy little book written entirely in Thai! I'll be ready to produce it for the cops with a perplexed farang shrug!

Use that scruffy little book. Always write in pencil because those books are recycled. They stay with the red plates and are passed on from one owner to the next. If you were going to leave your province, simply write the name of your destination into the book. If you fail to do this, you will be subject to a fine.if you comply and write the name of the province you're traveling to, you will be fine. It is okay to write it in English.

Same for me, I traveled to a few provinces while I had the red plates. I just fillet the log book that you are suppose to be given with the red plates.

If you go outside your province, you just fill the page with departure place and time and destination...

I was stopped a few time on road block and showed the log book to the police and their let me go no problem.

But I drove only during the day , between sunrise ans sunset, as required by the red plate.
