Katoey mangoes

Featured Replies

Old lady next door was on her porch peeling small ripe mangoes. She offered me one, and I ate it...quite nice, but amazingly it had no seed.

She asked me if it was nice and I said (in Thai) Yes, it was sweet. It had no seed!"

Her reply amused me very much....she said yes, it is seedless, it is a katoey mango.

Asked wifey about it and she said it is a variety called katoey because it has no sexual reproduction.

It's not quite accurate, but calling a seedless fruit a katoey, I thought amusing.

Any other amusing descriptions or names that people have come across?

(for the uninitiated, "katoey" is Thai for ladyboy.)

Could call it a Jaffa.

Poor katoeys imagine having a piece of fruit named after you, doh.

I really don't have much experience with katoeys but if you say some are sweet I will trust your expertise. ;)

Yeah, like farang , 555.

The best mangoe that I have ever eaten was brought to the city (Saigon) by a cousin who lives in the ex-wifes home village on the Mekhong. It had a small seed and a delicious, unique flavor. It was said to have been grown organically. The ex has built a new house down there and I'll be going to check it out over the December holiday season. I can't say that I'm looking forward to the four-hour bus ride down though. Maybe I'll try to hire a car. When I find out the particulars of the delicious mangoes, I'll post the info.

I grow several types including purple mangoes

Would you milk one?
