Thousands of fish suffocate in Makkasan pond

BANGKOK: -- An environmental tragedy has struck the Makkasan area, one of the last green spaces in the capital.

Thousands of fish were found dead Wednesday by officials who’d gone to investigate complaints from residents near the Burachat Chaiyakan pond in Makkasan.

Representatives from the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration concluded the mass death of all the pond’s fish was caused by oxygen levels in the pond falling to absolute zero. The fish had been dead for three days, they concluded.

Nonn Panitwong, a water health expert with the Green World Foundation said this was caused by a high concentration of waste water after the pond was not siphoned following the rainy season, reported Bangkok Post.

Most of the dead fish were tilapias, known for their ability to survive at very low oxygen levels. These fish are hard to kill, but the critical conditions in the pond proved lethal.

These fish are hard to kill... But the retarded nature of humans managed to killed them anyway.

I thought they would have been happy with the free food as they spend most of their time dragging every living thing out of the lakes.....and at least they didnt need a bright spark with a 220v wire to kill them...

I'm sure there's plenty of micro organisms left that do not need oxygen, so life in the pond is still abundant, do not despair.

Wow, I'm gonna have to spend some time this weekend thinking this issue through. Been busy lately trying to grapple with the whole Ukraine/Russia situation, the ISIS threat, the potential Ebola epidemic, major global drought.
