Assets of more NLA members declared
The Nation

BANGKOK: -- The National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) yesterday disclosed the assets and liabilities of 28 more members of the National Legislative Assembly who assumed their posts in early October.

Businessman and major Democrat Party supporter Chatchai Piyasombutkul and his wife are the richest among the 28 with assets valued about Bt1.5 billion and no liabilities, according to the announcement.

Energy businessman Anumad Ahmad, a former adviser to an Asean secretary-general, and his wife are the second richest with more than Bt337 million in assets.

The deputy commander of the First Army Region, Maj-General Apirat Kongsompong, and his wife have Bt121 million in assets. Kosol Petsuwan, rector of King Mongkut's Institute of Technology Lat Krabang, and his wife were the least wealthy. They declared Bt2.34 million in assets.

The NACC will display the asset and liabilities list from today until December 12 at its headquarters in Nonthaburi province.

WIVES - In Washington DC the congressmen and senators had wives who would enter the real estate business. Often the person or company of wealth that wanted favorable legislation would buy an expensive property from the "agency" resulting in handsome profits for the wife. It was kind of like money laundering the bribe. When that scam made the news, I think it was stopped.

OOOPS! I hope I did not plant any ideas.

It is good to see transparency in the NLA or at the very least their respect of the NACC's directive that they have to declare their assets.

Seems the rule of law is steaming along in a very democratic fashion.

only rich people in politics, no surprise there ...

too poor to be politicians, can always become police officer, seems very lucrative deal in this country, a few millions here, a few millions overthere

The only police who make serious money are the ones who can get their hands on enough money to "climb the ladder". The common guy on the street is never going to get mega-rich.

Transparency that is about as much as reading the comics section. What you see is only what you get. Corruption is usually "what you don't see is not what you got."

There needs to be a serious effort to validate declarations, not simply accept them as the baseline for future asset acquisition. NACC seems to be comfortable with Generals making $40,000-50,000 USD per year being able to accumulate wealthy estates far beyond their earnings. Do you believe that the NACC has the REAL authority to challenge the military flag officers, their subordinate and sub-subordinates to require explanations with records to validate their wealth? Considering martial law is in effect, who indicts and tries the military?
