The mother in law has been in a private hospital to have a knee operation and there does not seem to be any visiting hours and the MIL is constantly being interrupted with people coming and going and members of the family staying in the room every night and food being brought in from outside.

I just tried to explain to some of the family about home where there are visiting hours normally twice a day and no sleep overs every night after looking at the MIL looking quite stressed and trying to constantly trying to nod off with also complaining of being interupted by nurses during the night taking temperture and blood pressure, the room is untidy from others possessions and food every where.

I feel sorry for patients trying to recover and the staff .

I know from some hospitals that allow relatives to sleep there as well. I think have a relative close helps on the recovery. Considering that it is a private room and not share with other people.

But you are not "at home" different rules apply.

That's how it is done here (mostly), family assist and want to be with the sick and help where they can.

What you see as a problem may not be considered a problem by the MiL.

If you visited less, then there would be one less person to disturb her.

If the MiL gets jack of it, let her tell the others to piss off.

Same here .no one leaves ill people on their own except for doctors checks and procedures. ..someone hsa to alert staff etc

Haha in India the family sleep under the bed and cook the tea in the morning on a stove outside.

Welcome to Asia.

Better food than a western hospital by far!

Funny thing about the OP is the complaint about the nurses waking the MIL to do BP etc, and doing their jobs

Having spent some time hospital in Thailand I think the way the private hospitals/ rooms are set up is visit when you want etc is a good way to do it

I was in BKK Rayong for a few days and the nurses even wanted to know if I wanted Pizza Hut or KFC delivered LOL

Bloody hell, sometimes Hospitals can't win. When I used to work back in the UK people used to complain about the visiting hours being restrictive. Now we have this.

Here the hospitals expect a patient to have family stay with them in a private room. I sometimes help out elderly foreigners in Chiang Mai who live alone, check into to hospital and are surprised to find that the hospital won't let them stay by themselves in a private room. T

Actually, it makes sense if the patient just had surgery or is likely to wake up and be disoriented. Many elderly people can't properly work the "call nurse" button. Heck, the button usually isn't conveniently placed here. Also, the hospitals expect family to help with feeding, and bathing, etc.

It's possible to hire an off-duty nurse to do these tasks, but it's something that should be arranged in advance of hospitalization. The Thai nurses are always surprised when foreigners check themselves into hospital by themselves without family or friends.

Things are different in a general ward where there are visiting hours but there all beds are within sight of a nurse station where patients can be kept an eye on.

In a private room relatives or friends are encouraged to stay the night and most of day for it is a closed environment which cant be seen and therefore monitored by the nurses.

I have been in both situations as the patient and the visitor, overnight in some cases, and it is a system that works well.

If you see that the room is untidy (to your eyes) then you are quite at liberty to clean it up to your satisfaction, even free to ask the nurses to change things, they will comply with any reasonable request.

My wife and family stay with me in the hospital because all of the nurses are young and pretty and wear short skirts and high heels.

Well share the pics at least....don't be greedy!

I was just trying to put across that there should be some time for the patient to have time out to rest and also for doctors to visit and consult or discuss treatment without anybody and everybody giving their opinions also. Also non patients interferring and interrupting in the recovery and reabilitation process . Example the doctor will visit at 11-00 everyone is contacted by family member to be there too and the physio has to explain every step she is doing and why.

I fully agree that family should be close and give support and be able to visit during the day and stay overnight especally for children and the elderly.

It seems that most hospitals want someone from the family to stay with their relative ? Why ? Not enough nurses ?

I don't think that the hospital needs. I think that the family would like to stay with the patient and help him/her whenever he/she needs. I also think that some patients also want someone to stay with as well.
