This is a somewhat new development in Bangkok. I got stopped about a month ago at 2:30am in a taxi with the gf. Asked me to get out of taxi and checked my pockets and asked a few questions, where are you going?, where have you been? How long you stay I. Thailand ? ..... They didn't ask my gf anything or even ask her to get out of Taxi. 20 years in Thailand and this is the second time but this time they were looking at farangs .... Not sure what to think ???

No problem. Demand to speak to the UK ambassador and mention him by name, make one up if necessary, Gaylord Buttocks, for instance, and further insist on a strong cup of Earl Grey with two sugars and milk. That'll learn 'em.

Thonglor police have been famous for randomly stopping and harassing foreigners walking down the street or in taxis for many years.

Stickman has been banging on about this for at least 2 years in the area around the Asok intersection, where he apparently lives. No idea which Brainiac came up with the searches but clearly he isnt the only unhappy camper.

Not new at all.

Happened to me a few times when i lived in BKK about 6-7 years ago.

Funny enough, both times i was in the taxi and both times taxi driver went off at the cops and i was let go without a search.

Both times around Asok area.

If that happened to me I would seriously consider whether I would continue to live here anymore, if it happens to a Tourist of Traveler ,I doubt they will be back

I think tourism will continue to fall (Article in link mentions 20%)

It happened to my gf staff

He was carring money for her as of work.

Stopped and police was saying it could be drugs money and they give him test. Was negative and had to call work to confirm its business money.

Although as crazy as it sounds i heard about guy who drink a lot of M and red bull

And drug test come positive.

Caffeine taurine?

Thats whats one thai told me not sure its true. But guy who was tested was older man...

I was searched once, in the Asok/Ekkami corridor. It was a little jolting, but not that big a deal. Seems like there is a very real concern here with foreigners on overstay, so maybe a little spot checking is a good thing, provided it's not more than that...

The bad publicity that this is generating will not do anything for future tourist arrivals. Hopefully, if it takes off on the internet, it will persuade the BMA/police to back off.

Nothing like living in a good free democratic country. Right?

It seems they stop foreigners on sukhumvit just east of asoke. They stop us if we are walking, on a motorbike taxi or a regular taxi. Best to travel by skytrain or bus? As far as I know the number 2 bus is still free and goes the length of sukhumvit (thonglor area). Have yet to hear of foreigners being dragged off the bus for searching.

They're gonna get you if you're waiting for a bus in that area. In fact, you're probably a bigger target bc- in the eyes of Thai police- foreigners that ride the bus tend to look like overstay candidates living on the cheap.

This article seems like it was written by a teenager. It sounds more like something I'd hear coming from a bar stool than a respected news source. Not saying this isn't happening occasionally, but it hardly seems deserving of the viral status it's supposedly getting on FB.

they not search blacks, who sells drugs on street in area... u get me

They do but it's normally a sting operation with a small army of them to get them to IDC and booted out of Thailand if possible. With the size of Niger. compared to a Thai it's normally a mob-handed mission if you catch my drift.

Skytrain or bike-taxi (preferably with a hat or helmet on).

It doesn't have to be a color pc of your passport either.

These reports and video's need to be sent to TAT and PM.

Interesting to find out how many are taken to the police station to empty their wallets.

Nothing new as this has been going on for years

Recall reading and hearing about it happening a lot around Ekkamai bus station too

Never happened to me, but we rarely venture to that part of town
Just another black eye for Thailand as it seems to be getting more and more play now

Wondering if the international media is picking up on it?

If it is, it wold be just another reason to travel to another country and avoid Thailand
